Quinsy

Has anyone ever had this? I’ve got a really weird thing going on with my throat & am considering going to the minor injuries unit. It started completely out of the blue this morning & feels as if there’s something in it ( feels a bit sore but more so when I do the movement you do when you try to bring up phlegm). Tried to look at it using a torch but can’t see properly. I feel a bit queasy too & generally off.

I've had 2. Both agony and couldn't open my mouth properly

Did they take long to develop?

My dp had one. Look carefully in your mouth at the top and at the back near the uvula. Is there a mass? Also are you finding it difficult to swallow?
Another symptom is change of the sound of your voice.
And finally, as quinsy is an abscess, you’ll probably feel totally shit too

Yes..took about a week to develop....started off as just a sore throat..got to the point I could not swallow....ended up in a&e....go would not see me for a site throat

If it only started this morning, it’s unlikely to be quinsy - they are an abscess which develops (usually) from tonsillitis, and would be on one side of your throat. They are totally hideous but I wouldn’t panic yet.

I agree, Quinsy usually comes on after tonsillitis. Take pain killers, gargle with salt water and get an early night. See a GP if it doesn't settle down.

What makes you think it's Quinsy rather than a sore throat/tonsillitis?

My first was larger and the whole side of my face swelled up. The pain was in my ear as well as my throat. Took about a week of throat infection and got worse on antibiotics

It's something to be very aware of keeping an eye on - my step father didn't and we all assumed he was just complaining like normal (he's a bit of a hypochondriac) and he ended up having not only quinsy, but also a further abscess a bit further down classed as a retropharyngeal one - by the time he got his arse to the hospital he hadn't eaten for days so had fucked up his diabetic blood sugars splendidly, and his airway was pretty close to being blocked.

I’ve had it. It was hideous ended up in hospital for a week. The one thing that really stood out as being different to tonsillitis was I couldn’t open my mouth. It’s really nasty. Fingers crossed you feel better soon op.
