Booking holiday during notice period, thoughts?

Hi I've been working for a toxic company for ages and the impact on my health is no longer bearable. I've had 4 interviews & come close but just missed out on the last one especially. I'm burned our, depleted and need a break. I have enough money to tide me over before I continue job hunting.

I want to book a full week off next month and then hand my notice in about a week after (so the holiday would be during my notice period). So I'd be taking 5 days of the full week and I still have 9 days to use up.

Do you think this will be seen as sneaky? Could they try to back track in any way once approved?

It's fine and normal in some jobs, would you be expected to do a thorough handover before you leave? That might be a problem for them, but otherwise it's fine.

Most people do this so they don't have to work the full notice period, and like to have some time off between jobs.

Are you sure you are still eligible for all the holidays? When does your annual leave year end as they will prorate what you're annual allowance if if you leave before year end.

Note that they can refuse holiday requests so if they desperately need you to do handover etc then they might not allow you to take the time off but you can ask.

What I mean though @imnottoofussed is, I would get the holiday approved and hand in my notice about a week later. Could they reneg on this?

I'm happy to do a thorough handover. But it won't take a month to complete. In all honesty I've already started making sure everything is in the right place etc

Yes I think they can cancel holiday if they give you the same amount of notice as the amount of leave you want to take. So if you book a week off they can cancel it as long as they tell you at least a week beforehand. So depends on the timings.

They may be glad, if the other option is you having loads of untaken holiday they need to pay you for.

@Knittingupastorm I would be taking half the days off that I have left. But for this trip I'd need to book a flight to visit my friend - so if they try to reneg later it would ruin the whole trip.

Any advice on what I should do? I am going to resign next week, getting so many interviews I actually turned one down today! Think I'll be ok.

If I get a new job I ideally want to take the holiday before I start. This would mean hoping that in good faith they won't reneg.

But if I leave it and take a holiday later, it means I may go into a new job as frazzled as I feel now. Less than ideal. The fact I'm.struggling to make this decision speaks volumes tbh.
