Roof question

Who here has had a new roof fitted? I fear the time has come for our 1970's concrete delight to be replaced, but my question is - will I have to empty the attic before it's done? We've got loads of stuff up there and the thought of cleaning it out fills me with horror.

Hi. We had a new roof about 10 years ago. We didn’t clear the loft out as wasn’t loads in it. But we should have .. as it was all absolutely filthy afterwards

Same as Snoods. We didnt but we should have. Unfortunately we have loads of stuff up there and it's covered in filth. I can't even face cleaning it and am planning on just doing it each time we need something down!

Depends very much on the size of the job, if you have brilliant access and roofers can strip and throw the old tiles into a skip it will be quicker than if it will take loads of time to get the old roof off, that being the case you could get away with putting tarps over everything for the duration because once the new felt is on it’s pretty water tight If like me it’s a horrible kind drawn out job you will be better to empty the loft. However at the moment getting and trades is a nightmare so I would look at booking someone ASAP as it’s likely to be a long wait

Yes, we emptied our attic. If you don't, anything up there will be covered in dust and dirt.If you have anything you treasure, incase a roof tile falls etc, you will want to put those items somewhere safe. If the roof is exposed at any point rain etc may get in, though our company was very good at making sure this didn't happen. The workers also need to move around inside the attic, as they may need to fix weather boards there. I definitely would clear your attic before any work commences.

Another tip is to also put tarp on any grass as it was a nightmare getting all the small bits of tile that fell everywhere plus nails etc. If we'd know to put tarp down it would have meant just lifting it all up and folding it in on itself.
