Toys for six year old

I don’t have kids of my own but have a six yo nephew and would like to have a few toys at my house for him to play with. I already have longer ‘activities’ like a science kit, Lego and jigsaws but would like a few things he could just pick up and play with when he stops by for a quick visit. What do six year olds like?

Slightly wider context is that he has a new little sister and I have made her a toy box with some of his old baby toys. I was going to make one for him too but hadn’t yet got around to it when he dropped in unexpectedly. He looked a bit crestfallen when he couldn’t find anything for him in the toy box and I felt awful!

Ah you sound like a lovely Aunty. My nearly 6 year old is getting into family games now like Jenga and Guess Who.

Thanks @Lemmings123 I spotted Super Mario Jenga in a toyshop the other day and thought he might be too young for it. He loves Mario so sounds like it might be a winner!

My 6 year old likes goo jit Zu toys (sold at Smyths or Argos) he's also onto Marvel and the Avengers, hulk and Spider-Man. They do a range of action figures for made up play. Keeps mine entertained for a few hours.

Top trumps? My 7 yr old also loves lego, anything imaginext/ marvel related, colouring books, kerplunk etc.

Books, story books, facts books, stuff about space, planets, rockets, books you can read to him and ones he can read himself. Check his reading ability with his mum. Maybe all the six year old boys I know are book worms, but they dive into the books more than the toys. Aside from books, toy cranes. We have some huge toy cranes courtesy of grandparents. They are very popular.

Mine just wants to have the bloody tablet all the time. But after the strops that I said no have finished: kinetic sand, a ball, digging in the garden, pop it and dinosaurs.

Thank you all, these are great ideas for things I hadn’t thought of and quite a few I hadn’t even heard of! It will be fun to choose some things for him and hopefully next time he stops by a nice surprise to find his own basket

@Usuallyhappycamper He wants nothing but the tablet/TV since the lockdowns but I’m trying to help wean him off!

Bakugan (sp?) little transformer ball thingys. But any transformer-y toy that is dinosaur/car/monster related that makes aggressive fighty noises.

Playmags, cars, paper and pencils, joke books, dobble, connect 4, guess who, uno junior. Or give him £5 and take him to a decent charity shop to pick out some toys, books or games he likes. You sound like a lovely aunt!

My son loves Bakugan (balls that turn into robot things), hama beads, loom bands, Phase 10, Dobble…
