I went to the park yesterday and i think something must have lunched on my leg - i have two bites behind my knee. Its really sore!

What kind if bite could this be? Any idea? How can I ease the itchiness? I have tried antihistamine cream but it made no difference.

Just to make the day more annoying my daughter got a positive covid test today so i didnt feel like i could go waving my leg at a pharmacist.

I have attached a photo - my leg is really hairy Grin and i couldnt get a really fab photo of the back of my own knee - but if anyone more experienced with these things has any suggestions it would be amazing.

I have never found antihistamine cream effective.

Take a dose of piriton. And apply sudocrem to the site.

And

WeatherwaxLives · 08/09/2021 20:25

Not much help to you tonight, but I found
this surprisingly effective when I got bitten by some unidentified sabre toothed bug

The last and is random. Sorry.

serialname · 08/09/2021 20:27

You need to take piriton. You try also putting toothpaste on the bites if you don't have anything else at hand

alexdgr8 · 08/09/2021 20:28

i have some after-sun cooling gel, in a pump dispenser, from lidl, green bottle, orange top. others available, but pricey.
find it the best for this kind of thing. reapply as needed. apply widely.
it's the only thing that stops me scratching.

vampirethriller · 08/09/2021 20:29

If you've got any fresh basil rub some on it. If not vapour rub it similar works but not as well.

Loubiemoo · 08/09/2021 20:30

Keep an eye on the red mark around it. Draw around it with a pen to monitor its spread.

Antihistamine tablet.

impressivelycunty · 08/09/2021 20:31

Antihistamine, calamine / bite gel or similar and if it become hot or painful draw a circle around the edges with marker so you can tell if it's spreading / tracking.

FawnFrenchieMum · 08/09/2021 20:32

@Loubiemoo

Keep an eye on the red mark around it. Draw around it with a pen to monitor its spread.

Antihistamine tablet.

This ^^

The red marks around it suggest infection. If it spreads any further please get it seen.

QuestionableMouse · 08/09/2021 20:33

Please don't run toothpaste or vicks on it! That's asking for an infection!

Try an ice pack to reduce the inflammation and take some antihistamines. I would keep an eye on the redness and if it keeps spreading, seek medical help because you might need antibiotics.

CottageOnTheHill · 08/09/2021 20:36

It could be a horsefly bite. It looks very similar to the one I had a couple of weeks ago, especially with the swelling around it. I took antihistamine but ended up with antibiotics as the swelling tracked down my leg. Horsefly bites are nasty. I got a local pharmacist to check it and they gave me the antibiotic script.

WetWeekends · 08/09/2021 20:36

I agree with taking Piriton or something similar. Also hydrocortisone cream will help with the itching but doesn’t last as long as taking Piriton.

PennyWus · 08/09/2021 20:42

I agree, horsefly bite. Does it itch or hurt?

gelert5619 · 08/09/2021 20:47

I totally sympathise. I get this every single time and have had to cover up with embarrasment.
'Afterbite' pen from any chemist or supermarket, ammonia based is very good and I have a 'Biteaway' pen that gives a small sting but between them make a big difference. Good luck.

Makinganewthinghappen · 08/09/2021 20:48

Thanks everyone it it’s very itchy and a little sore!

simonisnotme · 08/09/2021 20:51

take an antihistamine and put a drop of surgical spirit on it
try not to rub/scratch it

OldTinHat · 08/09/2021 20:52

Ouch!!!
Sorry no advice other than antihistamines and steroid cream but it looks so sore.

AngryPrincess · 08/09/2021 22:07

Try applying heat. ( it’ll be really itchy when hot, but then should be better when it cools).
Hot shower or teaspoon from a cup of tea will work.

hedgehoglurker · 08/09/2021 22:10

Yes, hot spoon. Run under tap hot water or in a cup - 50/60 degrees. Then immediately apply and hold on. It should itch like crazy for a second or two, then stop. The relief should then last for hours.

anormalperson · 08/09/2021 22:11

Hydrocortisone if you have any!

Brokenrecord3006 · 08/09/2021 22:25

Yes, burn it! Get a hot spoon on there! Looks similar to my recent horse fly bites. An antihistamine (tablet not cream) also helped.

Choccorocco · 08/09/2021 22:50

Any kind of steroid cream you can get your hands on, the stronger the better. Don’t worry about skin thinning, you will only use it a handful of times on this bit of skin xx

TheHuntingoftheSnark · 08/09/2021 22:53

Take an oral antihistamine and put hydrocortisone cream on it. Unless you are tiny, take an daily antihistamine every 12 hours until it starts to go down. Draw a ring round it to make sure it doesn’t get bigger.

LikeaHurricane · 08/09/2021 23:02

I always have a reaction like yours to bites unfortunately. They are nasty. I agree with everyone's suggestion of taking a daily antihistamine tablet and applying the hot spoon. What I also find works for me and this is a bit "out there" but trust me it works and helps to reduce the swelling and pain and encourages healing quicker than anything else I've ever used ......
bathe them with some cotton wool soaked in Unpasteurised Organic apple cider vinegar which contains "The Mother"...it will sting quite a bit, but only for a little while and then apply some Unpasteurised local honey to them. Bit messy and sticky, but it works
Good luck!!
