I have a spreadsheet with a load of categories along the top, and months of the year down the first column.

Is there a way of swapping this round at the touch of a button, i.e. so the months can go along the top and the categories down the first column instead?

Yep, copy the whole table and then right click on the top left cell and and in the paste options should be "paste transpose"

Yes. Copy all the columns and paste special - select transpose.
