Which blinds for living room?

LunaTheTuna · 08/09/2021 09:33

I currently have (horrible) vertical blinds in the living room window. The window also has curtains that I'm going to keep.

I really want to get a different blind but can't decide what to go for.

I like roller blinds, but are they too bedroom-y? And if I get a roller blind I won't be able to peek out of the window 😂

But I'm not sure about horizontal/Venetian blinds either, are they too office-y?

Any thoughts or pictures of what you have gratefully received!

Do you need blinds as well as curtains? Are you close to the road outside or could you do without?

LunaTheTuna · 08/09/2021 09:40

I like having blinds so that I don't always have to have the curtains shut. In autumn and spring, when it's not so cold but gets dark early, I find it nicer than the curtains being shut. I am close to the road but I don't give a monkeys about anyone looking in 😂

I don't really j detests d the difference between having the blinds closed & the curtains closed

But sounds like what you need is wooden verticals. In either natural or white depending on your decor. Then you can use them to snoop out of adjust for the sun in summer.

You can hoist them up or leave them down & tilted.

Curtains for when you want to feel cosy.

Sorry, not sure what happened there?

I said 'I don't understand the difference...

Nothing to do with detest at all ?!?!

violetbunny · 08/09/2021 09:46

What about wooden shutters? I'm considering some for our living spaces.

LunaTheTuna · 08/09/2021 09:48

😂 no worries, I figured out what you meant!

As you say, having the curtains closed is more cosy, but I don't necessarily want to feel cosy in the autumn/spring.

I love shutters, but I believe they aren't cheap.

You can get "sheer" roller blinds.

LunaTheTuna · 08/09/2021 09:52

Just looked up sheer roller blinds. Love them! Great for snooping....

But are they even more bedroom-y than normal roller blinds?

Zebra/day and night blinds, privacy film, wooden/metal venetian blinds, privacy film, nets, voile panels, bamboo blinds, shutters.

It's all about your personal taste and your budget.

LunaTheTuna · 08/09/2021 09:54

Indeed. Which is why I decided on either roller or Venetian blinds, just not sure which to go for.

We have wooden horizontal blinds in the living room (and most other rooms). They look really nice but need a lot of dusting!!

ChirpyChirp · 08/09/2021 10:04

Venetian blinds even. I had to Google to find out what they were 🤣

LunaTheTuna · 08/09/2021 10:07

I call them horizontal blinds too 🙂 although someone told me the other day they're not called horizontal blinds but Venetian blinds 🙄

I was thinking about the dusting. What colour wood do you have? I was thinking lighter wood wouldn't show up the dust quite as much....

the slatted/venetian blinds you can buy a tool for dusting them. It is time consuming. I also have the day/night and bamboo ones which are much easier to dust with the crevice tool on the hoover.

I have shutters. White ones. Doesn't disguise the dust unfortunately

ChirpyChirp · 08/09/2021 13:23

My blinds are white. The dust isn't that obvious from a distance. I clean them with the brush attachment on my vaccume cleaner.

My parents have the day and night blinds. They look lovely. If we replace our wooden ones we'd go for these instead.

EssentiallyDisorganised · 08/09/2021 13:28

We have white wood effect Venetians, they don't show the dust at all, I just shut them, swoosh them with a Pledge fluffy duster, turn them the other way and repeat.

ChinesedragonTeapot · 08/09/2021 13:34

How about roman blinds?

FooFighter99 · 08/09/2021 13:40

Might be old fashioned, but I have net curtains up at all my windows - got a really lovely design (not old lady-like at all) from The Range

great for snooping and people can't see in (we live on a busy main road)

LunaTheTuna · 08/09/2021 15:06

I'm definitely leaning towards wood Venetian blinds, probably in white.

Do I go with made to measure or off the shelf? I'm conscious that companies like Hillary's charge a fortune!

Blinds2Go are good.

They have a wide variety and offer free samples.

EssentiallyDisorganised · 08/09/2021 18:01

We got ours from Blinds2Go and have been very pleased with them
