Fruit flies! 🤮

I've got so many fruit flies in my house suddenly. I think that's what they are. Urrgh, I can't work out were they're coming from. They've been in the house for over a week and fly spray doesn't work. The bastards keep dive-bombing into my wine. How can I get rid of them?!😭

Throw some anti block stuff down the sink and run the hot tap for 5 minutes to rinse the pipes. Apparently they live and breed down there. That sorted them out for me anyway.

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 07/09/2021 23:21

😭😭😭 I had this last year. Suggest a coaster on top of your glass whenever you leave the room.
Can't help with finding the source....usually old nectarine lurking in my house.

Apple cider vinegar in a pot, covered in clingfilm, little punctured holes with a pen - just big enough for them to get in.

VaguelyInteresting · 07/09/2021 23:24

Yeah we’ve been inundated this week. Came in with the bananas I think.

If you get a small bowl and fill it with cider vinegar, then add 3 drops of washing up liquid (to break the surface tension) the vinegar will attract them, and then they’ll.. well they’ll drown frankly.

Must have caught a hundred of them with that sort of trap this week.

It’s been a horrorshow.

We do similar - use a small plastic bottle cut in half with spout bit tipped upside down & pushed back in side the other half & fill the bottom with vinegar. They fly in but can't get back out.

I'm glad and horrified to see I'm not alone..I've never had this problem before. I'm going to start with what @PubicMenace recommended then work my way down the list. They must be breeding somewhere because so many have died but they keep coming 😭

There was an open bottle of wine with just a tiny bit of wine at the bottom and there were about six floundering in there. It was like a horror show! So I assumed that was it, but no there's loads of the buggers happily flying about 😭

I had this earlier this year. Tried the vinegar and washing liquid with water in a glass and caught one Blush. Turned out to be some onions in one of my pan drawers Confused. The onions stay in the fridge now. There were hundreds not to mention the dead ones. Good luck finding the source.

PickAChew · 07/09/2021 23:47

Agree with pp. They're probably drain flies. My bathroom is swamped with them a d only Mr muscle keeps them under control.

I have that and so far it has not caught a single fruit fly and I have loads of them all buzzing around.
LoveFall · 07/09/2021 23:51

I posted about the same thing last week. It is the fruit fly time of year. They come in on fresh produce and we are enjoying plenty of local fruits and veg right now.

I don't like to keep everything in the fridge. A refrigerated local field tomato is a travesty!

I am using the apple cider vinegar in a small bowl with a few drops of washing up liquid method and it really does work.

So they're dying, but do they still keep coming?

I don't have any drain unblocker in the house so I've poured some bleach down all the downstairs sink plugholes.

Fly paper hanging everywhere was the only way I could get rid of mine.

NekoShiro · 07/09/2021 23:58

Bring any soil into the house recently? New indoor plants? I changed my plants soil and now they're everywhere ):

Waitwhat23 · 08/09/2021 00:04

We're having the same issue at the moment. We're using a wine glass filled with vinegar and then cling film draped over as a funnel, with a knife hole at the bottom. No static water left in the sink and no smears/crumbs etc anywhere at all!

Have managed to catch quite a lot now, fortunately.

No! I've checked my indoor plants and I can't see any around them.

We've got one of those grass patches for our indoor cat to chomp on & every time I watered it last week, there were loads of fruit flies flying up out of it. 🤢 I've chucked it in the compst bin now.

How the hell do they live in drains when water goes down there all the time? 🤔😭

I've put loads of bleach down then run hot water down for ages.

I've just chucked out my potatoes and onions even though I can't see any flies around them because I literally do not have any other organic matter anywhere else apart from in the fridge. I need to go back to basics.

They seem to love the bin 🙄😬

When I've had them in the bath, I've aimed the shower at them and they just fly through it. They don't mind water and seem to thrive on soap residue.
