Fruit flies! 🤮

TheHouseILiveIn · 07/09/2021 23:03

I've got so many fruit flies in my house suddenly. I think that's what they are. Urrgh, I can't work out were they're coming from. They've been in the house for over a week and fly spray doesn't work. The bastards keep dive-bombing into my wine. How can I get rid of them?!😭

Appreciate the free protein GrinHmm

Aquamarine1029 · 08/09/2021 00:28

Check your onions, if you have any. The fuckers LOVE onions.

Mariell · 08/09/2021 00:31

Do not waste your money on Nippon fly spray as it’s completely ineffective.

I haven’t bought fly spray in years but do remember it being deadly and instantly killing flies with one spray.

The Nippon one does absolutely nothing.

I had two mating on a doorframe and saturated them with the spray and they didn’t budge and whilst clearly coated in the spray they carried on and then flew around before settling elsewhere none the worse for being sprayed!

Millicentsparty · 08/09/2021 00:34

A friend of mine got them in their house through a pot plant.

Millicentsparty · 08/09/2021 00:36

If you want to kill stuff, use Acclaim. But you need to leave the room and not inhale - it's not fussy what it kills.

They must have been so annoyed with you interrupting their copulation Grin

Get a big bag of ice, throw it into your sink to slowly melt over night et voilá! Problem solved - and I tried everything else suggested.

imnottoofussed · 08/09/2021 01:55

The cider vinegar trick does catch them but you have to drown them every now and then otherwise they manage to crawl back out of the cling film holes. We've not eradicated them completely yet but some being dead is better than none being dead.

This sounds good (and easy!).... why does it work?

So glad it’s not just me! I hate them!

AGirlCalledJohnny · 08/09/2021 02:53

Smothers the bastards. They're breeding in your sink drain

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 08/09/2021 03:42

If they're drain flies they'll be very small and leave a black powdery residue when you splat them. We've had the little bastards in the en suite and apparently they can lay hundreds of eggs a day. The foaming cleaners are the best to deal with them but hard to sort if they're in the overflow (we can't get in to clean that bit).

We've also had fruit flies in the kitchen. They came in on aldi raspberries. Opened the pack and they were all just sat there looking at me. Being in the fridge must have made them dopey as I managed to kill a few. They're bigger than drain flies and look very different close up.

LoveFall · 08/09/2021 04:05

Fruit flies are not the same as drain flies. They are attracted to and come in on fruit and vegetables this time of year. Many scientists work with them to study genetics as they multiply quickly and have some easily identified traits, but they do not live in drains.

We have had them every single year at this time because of the fruits and vegetables that we buy fresh from the farmers' markets. They are not nice to have but not deathly unclean either.

There are other flies like fungus gnats that are different but similar.

Fruit flies are a pain but not dangerous. Use the apple cider vinegar but make sure you put in a couple of drops of washing up liquid. They can't get out because the surface tension of the liquid is changed by the soap.

LoveFall · 08/09/2021 04:15

The flies coming out of plants are fungus gnats, not fruit flies that are a bit bigger.

Unless you have fruit and veg in your bathroom, you have something other than fruit flies in there.

Find the source! We had millions of the little blighters last year. After a couple of torturous weeks my DH decided to take the kids swimming…pulled his sports bag out the cupboard and well….needless to say we found the source. It was a half eaten banana that he’s decided to put in his BAG rather than, you know…a BIN like normal people would, some weeks before. I threw the whole bag and all it’s contents in the outside bin and they started disappearing. All gone within a day or two. Grim!

Suzi888 · 08/09/2021 05:35

Had these in the office once, source was fruit that had been left to rot. The office had to be closed and fumigated to kill the little buggers. Envy not envy. Good luck OP.

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 08/09/2021 05:37

We've had lots of flies too

Not relishing finding the source Confused

Payproblems · 08/09/2021 07:26

We used to joke about fruit fly colony, our pets.

I found they went so quickly if you simply removed the rotten fruit.

LegendaryReady · 08/09/2021 08:01

I've had a fruit bowl out all summer and no issues but I've noticed them the last few days too. I'm hoping they're one of those short lived things and will be gone soon.

They definitely hang around any food waste, not just fruit. My used teabags were causing an issue.

OldTinHat · 08/09/2021 08:12

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

Sorry...not helpful! Grin

Newchallenge · 08/09/2021 13:15

Ok. Might win an award for most pretentious post here....but would balsamic vinegar work?! I don't have any apple cider vinegar.

APurpleSquirrel · 08/09/2021 14:06

Here's a picture of our fruit fly trap - needs emptying 🤢 But definitely works.

Jesus, that must have stunk the entire house out! I cannot cope with banana skins being left to fester for even an hour. They’re banned from my house and if someone eats one near me at work I move desks 😂

That is a thing of beauty! Grin. Is that normal vinegar or apple cider vinegar?

I have made similar using elder flower and apple juice and it’s trapped a lot but not nearly enough so I need to get something g else to lure them!

multiplemum3 · 08/09/2021 14:32

I've had them and the apple cider worked amazingly, I did put a fair amount of washing up liquid in with it and within a couple a days, what felt like, thousands were all dead in there. Nasty things.
