Fruit flies! 🤮

I've got so many fruit flies in my house suddenly. I think that's what they are. Urrgh, I can't work out were they're coming from. They've been in the house for over a week and fly spray doesn't work. The bastards keep dive-bombing into my wine. How can I get rid of them?!😭

We had this problem a few weeks ago, they were living and breeding in my food waste bin in the garden and sneaking their way into the house. Once I sorted the bin they disappeared.

@Mariell It's Apple Cider Vinegar - not sure if normal malt vinegar would work?

TheHouseILiveIn · 12/09/2021 20:20

Thank you everyone for your tips and tricks. I will be using them but haven't yet been to a supermarket to get supplies of cider vinegar. I have been zapping them with multisurface cleaner and it's killing the little buggers! No idea why when fly spray doesn't. I even have my bin drawer open and I can't see any flying around. I will report back.

I have even left an open bottle of wine on the side for the alcoholic bastards not projecting, oh no!

Oh god, I have just seen one...must go

You need to do the trap with cling film and vinegar. I also sacrificed a glass of wine and out cling film over the top of that too and I caught hundreds over the course of two or three days. I left an open bottle of wine with some dregs at the bottom and that didn’t work as a trap nearly so well.

HoneyItAlreadyDid · 12/09/2021 20:38

I used red and white wine vinegar and that worked in lieu of some cider vinegar.

Did that get rid of them for good, though? I've killed loads but they're still coming 😭

Drink your wine from the bottle with a straw 🍷🍷
Don't have a clue about the fruit flies.

OP I can't recommend this highly enough. Apple cider vinegar stopped working for me. I went nuclear and killed about 100 in 20 mins. I now zap one or two a day before they get a chance to lay eggs. It was actually starting to depress me, they were coming into my house from communal bins. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B088KF3KT1?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

We had tonnes and I’m still catching a few on day four, with the odd one still flying about. Nothing like before I started though, it was awful. I didn’t see results until day two. Had to make several traps for different points in the kitchen/living room/hall and even our bedroom! 😷

Have just seen a Tictok where someone used mushed up fruit instead of wine/vinegar.

Mine were coming in a window from our outside compost bin. We’re not going to use our open that compost bin for a while, hopefully that’ll help.

Mariell · 12/09/2021 20:50

I have a fly invasion and I’m winning by using the fly papers.
It’s gruesome and was slow to start off with but I now have strips full of them each day.

I dispose of the strips daily as they are full and i unhook and let drop into a bin bag which I take out daily with me and put in a service station or petrol station bin.

I use apple cider vinegar in a small tub with clingfilm over the top with a hole.. The fuckers drown

HarrisMcCoo · 12/09/2021 22:04

Our kitchen is covered in them. Set the cider vinegar traps today as I have just had it with them! Will check them in the morning.

longtompot · 12/09/2021 22:12

We have loads due to the home compost caddy in our utility. I keep the lid shut, scrub it clean between each empty and dry it in the sunshine and still they keep coming back. I was swatting them in our kitchen a few nights ago with a damp dishcloth. Got quite a few. I know they aren't really horrible, but they are so annoying with how they hover just in front of your face, or breaststroke in my glass of wine. Reds the worst as you can't see them straight away. I'll add apple cider vinegar to the shopping list and see if that works.

Gingersay · 12/09/2021 22:13

I got one of those fruit fly ninjas from amazon a couple of weeks ago and they have all gone. This is the only thing that's worked for me I tried everything.

HarrisMcCoo · 13/09/2021 07:36

Found several lying at the bottom of the traps this morning. Had set three traps yesterday. But still just as many flying around 😩 will try the Amazon buy as recommended 🤞
