I’ve just heard church bells coming from someone’s house

So I just took the dog for a quick wee on the green near my house and I could very clearly hear church bells coming from what sounded like inside a house opposite. The nearest church with change ringing bells is three miles away and the bells can never be heard from here even on a Sunday morning.

For some reason this has really spooked me out as it was really quiet and there was no one around!

Can anyone offer an explanation?

Someone listening to a recording of church bells? Our nearest church with bells is two miles away but on a still day I can hear them at my house. Maybe you were actually hearing the nearest bells?

CiaoForNiao · 07/09/2021 21:00

Music?
A movie?
Sex ritual?

Foxhasbigsocks · 07/09/2021 21:01

It will be handbells op!

Tuneful doorbell

Definitely not hand bells. Proper church bells being change rung as they would be on a Sunday morning or at a Wedding.

My child has ASD and an intense obsession with clock tower and church bells. YouTube is a goldmine of bell videos which he plays as often and as loud as he can. If he can't, he stands at the back step looking at the church on the corner and rings bells/triangles.

You must live near us, hi neighbor.

ElvenDreamer · 07/09/2021 21:24

They practice change ringing on hand bells also, or could be a mini ring in someone's garden. There is a vaguely portable one that does the rounds in our district I believe. Usually for events rather than just someone's garden to be fair.

Els1e · 07/09/2021 21:26

My sister has a ring tone which is a peel of bells. If you’re in Bath, she’s got a message.

Here you go, OP. Bells on Sunday

People do full peaks on handbells.

WhenZoomWasJustAnIceLolly · 07/09/2021 21:46

Peals

Withgasoliiiiine · 07/09/2021 22:00

Maybe their alarm clock tone?

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 07/09/2021 22:02

My family come from a town were the church has bells and they make a beautiful sound. I have it recorded on video and I do play the video every now and again as I live thousands of miles away...

... that's a possible, non-spooky reason OP Smile

NeonJellyBaby · 07/09/2021 22:16

There probably is a rational explanation for it. It was just so creepy sounding at night with no one around lol

Don’t be so sure it isn’t from the church. Our nearest church bells are quite a distance away. Ordinarily you won’t hear them.

But the first time I heard them I bloody shit myself. It was about 11pm on a very still night (much like tonight) from my garden. I couldn’t hear another sound. It was so eerie I did at first think they were ghost bells as I wasn’t expecting it!!

It also depends on which way the air flow is carrying the noise. We live close to the railway. Most of the time you’d not even know the tracks were there as you don’t hear a thing.

Other days you hear every single train that passes by.

Oooh I’m imagining the goth lady from Edward Scissorhands in a semi detached new build

NeonJellyBaby · 08/09/2021 13:03

@MrsFlinch that’s interesting. I suppose it could have been the bells from the church in town, and just as you say it was a very still, quiet evening which is why it spooked me so much.

A church near here plays a recording of bells at weddings, maybe someone testing something similar at home? They sound totally realistic.

Boood · 08/09/2021 14:29

We could hear church bells at around 9 last night, I wonder if you live near us.

It's a spooky ghost OP, come to murder your entire village after dark

LukeEvansWife · 09/09/2021 15:53

It could be a load of people gathering for a Songs of Praise watch party? Grin

What do you mean 'probably'? Confused

Of course there is, it's just that no-one here can tell you what it was unless a MNetter pipes up and says, "Oh yes that was me, watching my wedding DVD back".

Or ‘’Bells on Sunday’ from Radio 4 lol
