How your voice sounds in your head compared with how it actually sounds?

My voice sounds quite deep and 'cultured/well spoken' in my head. Unfortunately having to transcribe a discussion I recorded the other day I was reminded I actually sound really droney and nasal and like the voice of someone playing a low-ranking pedantic jobsworth in a sitcom. Blush

I have a meeting tomorrow where I have to present some stuff so, following listening to the recording, I have written all over my notes to vary my cadence and tone - I'm sure... or I hope... I am more varied in normal conversation but I think I can get very monotone when checking notes.

In my head I sound like a sultry "Lady Mary from Downton Abbey"

Reality - somewhere between Joe Pasquale and a hyper 8 year old girl

SingleHandSue · 07/09/2021 19:46

Oh god me too! I always thought I had quite a deep voice - it sounds it in my head - but having started a new job where I have to hear my voice I realised it’s bloody horrible! Screechy, whiny sounding noise just falls out of my gob.

MrsAvocet · 07/09/2021 19:48

I've got a much stronger accent in reality than I have in my head.

EBearhug · 07/09/2021 19:48

Whenever I hear myself on a recording, my sister appears to have spoken over everything I said. I'm sure it's not me!

DedalusBloom · 07/09/2021 19:49

In my head I'm proper Sarf London. I always surprise myself when I hear my voice played back, which is much more girly and polite than Imagine!

romdowa · 07/09/2021 19:50

I sound really high pitched in real life and I have a far thicker accent 🤣🤣 I feel sorry for everyone who has to listen to me.

YouJustDoYou · 07/09/2021 19:52

I thought my.voice was"okay - a bit deep, a bit lazy at times, but nothing horrific per se....until my mum.heard me speaking in a video without seeing who was speaking and said loudly and in great disgust, "urgh!! That VOICE!"...I was like...that's me, mum. She couldn't back peddle.fast enough. My own 8 year old has also said he wishes I had a higher voice....and I answered the phone to my brother the other day and he didn't recognise me, said "I though you were some old woman". sigh.

BusySittingDown · 07/09/2021 19:52

The voice in my head sounds like a faster, posher version of my actual voice.

In recordings I remind myself of Gary Barlow. Right slooow and noooorthern!

AlfonsoTheMango · 07/09/2021 19:54

I have a terrible vocal fry, despite my best efforts. Mixed with my obvious foreign accent it's not pleasant.

PepperPepperMan · 07/09/2021 19:54

In my head I sound like Catherine Zeta Jones and on playback I'm more like worzel gummidge.

Echobelly · 07/09/2021 20:17

It's a whole world of disappointment! Grin

In my head: mature, sensible, a little deep.
In reality: like a fishwife/EastEnders reject

H1978 · 07/09/2021 20:21

I hate hearing my recorded voice, i definitely sound like a man 😳

Skinnymimi · 07/09/2021 20:25

In my head : sexy jazz singer / radio presenter / smoked two packs a day since I was 10.
In reality: Alternates between plain man and ultra high pitched. …

Laiste · 07/09/2021 20:26

In my head i have a bland mid counties 'no real accent' sort of voice.

Reality?

Peggy Mitchell - sped up about 3 times.

''Ged aat'a my pub!'' HmmGrin

MissyB1 · 07/09/2021 20:29

In my head I have a deeper voice and no accent.
My real voice is actually very squeaky with a north midlands accent Hmm

SomethingElf · 07/09/2021 20:29

In my head: deep, sexy, well spoken
In reality: the voice of a nervous teenage girl with a head cold.

Laiste · 07/09/2021 20:33

@DedalusBloom

Your posts often make me laugh and i always read them in a low plumby accent!

Cocolapew · 07/09/2021 20:34

Does everyone think they sound lower in ther heads? Turns out I actually sound like Minnie Mouse, and my accent is much stronger.

SunShinesBrightly · 07/09/2021 20:36

My voice sounds high in my head. In reality it is VERY droney and low pitched. Not good.

JaninaDuszejko · 07/09/2021 20:36

My sister does the same to me Grin
moregarlic · 07/09/2021 20:37

In my head: Mariella Frostrup

Reality: First year Hermione Granger

Justajot · 07/09/2021 20:38

In my head, normal if a bit deep. Reality, a sort of posh drawl.

GrouchyKiwi · 07/09/2021 20:39

My voice sounds firm and deep in my head. In reality it is actually quite gentle and soft, like one of those ineffectual women from 50s melodramas. Still fairly deep, for a woman.

JovialNickname · 07/09/2021 20:39

In my head - Deep, strong, authoritative

In reality according to my prerecorded answerphone message - nasal, childlike and whiny
