Asking permission to remove school blazer - why?

297 replies

MyMushroomsInATimeSlip · 07/09/2021 17:03

DS had started secondary school this week and now has to ask permission to remove his blazer when he's hot.

Have great respect for teachers as it's not a job I could ever do and generally back up school rules. However I genuinely cannot understand the reason for this one. Can someone enlighten me?

DD(also year 10)’s school are allowing students to leave off jumpers but still expect blazers to be worn so they look smart. Again not an issue.

Wow they didnt have to wear a jumper and a blazer in 25° heat - what kindness Confused

Were all the teachers also wearing jackets to look smart?

If there is a school photo or children outside the school representing their school then maybe looking smart is a priority. If they're simply completing some work set by a teacher, in a warm classroom, why is wearing a blazer and looking smart more important than getting on with your work but feeling a comfortable temperature? (I would argue if they're wearing a shirt and tue they would look smart with or without the blazer)

The U.K. education system has so many issues - how ridiculous that some schools focus so much time on stipulating impractical uniform and rules.

@Parker231

There is no such thing as a 'UK' education system. All four countries which currently make up the UK operate their own education systems. Scotland has its own system which is completely different in every way and Scottish schools do not the have silly uniform rules as they do in England.

Schools in Scotland are not allowed to make uniform compulsory although they can request it. No educational time can be lost due to lack of uniform.

We're pretty sensible in Scotland.

@Peteycat

The DCs’ schools are hugely oversubscribed so the strict unifier policy and general discipline are strongly supported by parents.

In fact some parents have been known to report DC seen with blazers off or shirts untucked after school to the head for detention.

Cherrysoup · 11/09/2021 19:16

I don’t make them ask, except in Year 7 where it’s a language structure we want them to use in French/Spanish. Walking round the site, they’re expected to wear them, but not in lessons.

Parker231 · 11/09/2021 19:30

@Cherrysoup - why would they need to wear them around the site if the weather is warm.

DC’s school had no uniform so on a warm day they would usually wear shorts and T-shirt- appropriate for the weather.

Why not? In an air conditioned school? I’m talking about if they need to go on a message etc/swapping classes. Staff wear jackets if walking round indoors. Obviously I don’t mean outside at break etc, that would be ridiculous.

SusannaM · 11/09/2021 19:50

@cherrysoup

Aircon?!

Cherrysoup · 11/09/2021 19:58

@SusannaM sorry, not stealth blasting, it’s a brand new building! I didn’t even notice the heatwave last week until I walked out into the car park!

UserOfManyNames · 11/09/2021 20:08

I really do think there should be an overhaul of school uniform rules, especially secondary school’s. It’s stuck in the 1950s.

They have all these ridiculous regulations for expensive kit, apparently to instil smartness ready for work and then what happens, they go to college and university in JEANS, HOODIES and TRAINERS Hmm.

it is an absolute joke. Maybe MN should start a petition?

Parker231 · 11/09/2021 20:13

We didn’t choose DC’s school because it had no uniform but am glad there wasn’t one. Their cousins in Canada, US, Belgium and France didn’t have uniforms either and they all were high achievers going onto Uni’s ( DC’s both got all A’s in GCSE and A levels and firsts in their degrees) so it had no detrimental impact on their learning - only positives. I can’t think of any negatives in them never wearing school uniform.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 11/09/2021 20:15

Mine all repeat after me 'Can I take my blazer off please?' I say yes and tell them that the permission lasts all year. I really can't be doing with them asking every five minutes.

However, they are supposed to have blazers on around the site and hoodies have been banned. The uniform rule says they all have to have a coat.

Wow. What a bunch of arse holes the parents are at your school. I truly hope the kids who have been reported by busy body shits get their houses egged by the kids. Honestly what a snobbish load of shite.

Peteycat · 11/09/2021 21:27

Yes, before you say it I'm not very nice no. When people like you continue to bully children just because you are an adult and they are not, I turn into a female hooligan.

I'll let you into a secret. I live in an area where school places are like gold dust, and the parents don't act like this. I think you may be talking bollocks.

Honestly

GertrudeKerfuffle · 11/09/2021 21:51

@Pebbledashery

God I remember this from when I went secondary years ago.. In French class, you had to ask in French also. Its so draconian.
Ha! I still remember this..."Puis-je oter mon veston?"

Wankers (branleurs)! Grin

Hopefully future generations at English schools will abolish school uniform.

Do they estimate it’s £340 for a secondary school uniform. For one child? My DD’s last uniform cost more like £150. Including a winter coat. It lasted all year. I dread to think how much a yearly supply of non-uniform clothing would have cost. An awful lot more. Fortunately my DC don’t relentlessly insist on fashion brands but some do. Either that or they are singled out if they are not wearing the ‘latest’ trainers.

Uniforms are worn for a reason. The same reason that many many employers insist their staff wear a uniform.
Office wear or supermarket, shop, factory uniforms. The police, the NHS, the fire service. Dominoes pizza guy, the person who works in McDonalds... They all wear uniforms. Swimming, judo, football/sports teams... The Army, the cadets, Guides, Scouts...
They all have an identity.

I could go on.

Peteycat · 13/09/2021 20:08

@SunShinesBrightly
Must say I agree with you. There will be kids that can't afford the latest trends, so obviously more bullying would go on, which would be awful. I think there should definitely be uniforms, but an overhaul is needed and the prices should go down. Sensible, ethical materials and no bloody rules about removing items.

Its nice to see them in them too, but like I say not forcing them to wear things if it's hot/cold.

Parker231 · 13/09/2021 20:32

@SunShinesBrightly - my DC’s went to a non uniform school from 5-18. No one wore designer brands. They wore shorts and T-shirt in the summer and jeans and a hoodie in the colder weather . Just their normal clothes which they would have anyway.
I’ve never worn a uniform for work, neither has DH. DC’s are just starting their professional careers but neither wear a uniform.

Their cousins in France, Belgium, US and Canada have also never worn school uniform.

Popcornbetty · 13/09/2021 20:35

If students have to wear a blazer than so should teachers who are refusing to allow them to remove it. It is awful and so dangerous in the heat. Cannot quite believe this archaic rule exists today

cactijones · 13/09/2021 20:35

@Popcornbetty absolutely agree it's ridiculous

Larryyourwaiter · 13/09/2021 20:52

I’ve worked in schools where the staff also have to wear jackets/blazers and can only take them off with permission.
If you work in an office or you are in an empty classroom you can take them off though. Need to put them on to walk about.

I’m generally a fan of uniform. However I think it needs to be much more basic and non branded. Get rid of bloody blazers. A good jumper and tie looks as smart. Honestly there are lots of children who just don’t fit in blazers properly, they are uncomfortable and smelly things.

Stovetopespresso · 13/09/2021 20:58

@SunShinesBrightly "Uniforms are worn for a reason." then your list. you do sound conformist!! have you ever wondered what the reason is?

Peteycat · 13/09/2021 21:28

@Lardyyourwaiter

Haha I'm yet to see a child that actually wears a blazer that fits! All those bloody shoulder pads and pockets, bloody awful!

SunShinesBrightly · 13/09/2021 21:47

Parker231
Obviously there are jobs where a uniform is not required. I have give examples of those that do. There are plenty more.
I can’t be bothered to list every single one I can think of.
