How much oily fish do you eat in a week?

Instead of supplements I’ve started eating tinned sardines. Guidance from the Heart Foundation and NHS advised at least 2 portions of fish a week one of which is oily. I wouldn’t mind a can of sardines every day as after not having any for years think they’re really tasty. They are supposed to be low mercury too. How many portions are you eating and do you reckon daily is too much?

Tonythedog. M&S do tins of boneless sardines. I’m not sure if other places do them but M&S definitely do.

2x a week - salmon

DeeCeeCherry · 07/09/2021 05:33

I eat fish 4-5 times a week. It's not always oily fish though. My DCs watched Seaspiracy and told me about it so I'm nervous now but I can't face going Vegan (I don't eat meat), tried before but found it beyond tedious.

Smaller fish such as sardines are meant to be best, aren't they?

But all that toxic waste in the sea...

Sorry!

@SameToo

How do you balance the environmental impacts of fishing and fish farming if you eat lots of fish?

Genuine question because I’d like to eat more but always feel guilty.

Live rurally near a fishing village. Buy direct from the quay or farm shop.

Fish is line caught.

mellongoose · 07/09/2021 06:02

I appreciate this is not easy for everyone!

mellongoose · 07/09/2021 06:04

Concerned about the amount of people on here eating salmon. Most supermarket bought salmon is farmed and farmed fish is a bringer of diseas to natural wild stocks.

sanityisamyth · 07/09/2021 06:06

None. I don't like the taste or flavour of fish, and also worried about overfishing and the state of the oceans and seas. I'd rather leave the fish where they are!

I usually eat mackerel in olive oil 2/3 times a month. Either in crusty sandwich or a big salad.

AlternativePerspective · 07/09/2021 06:31

I’m not a fan of tinned sardines but I love tuna, peppered mackerel (which incidentally I’m having for dinner tonight,) we eat quite a lot of sea bass,.

We have a fishmonger close by which I have been desperate to go to but haven’t yet had the chance (I live a bus ride away). I would eat more fish if I could afford to as some of it is quite expensive.

Incidentally, anyone looking for fresh fish, during lockdown I discovered

Www.just caught.co.uk

They’re pricy but the quality is excellent and it is delivered fresh in those ice pack boxes…

None.

Have you looked into omega 3 : omega 6 ratios? I am eating salmon, prawns and Mackerel (for the omega 3) probably 4-5 times a week now and in addition am avoiding seed oils (high in omega 6). Apparently we should aim for a ratio of 1:4 omega 3 : omega 6 and very high omega 6 ratios are everywhere so it is an uphill battle but you have to eat a lot of fish to counteract things like sunflower oil, margarine and processed food so it is easier to cut those things down.

Oily fish should be limited for certain groups (mainly women/girls!) If they plan on getting pregnant/are pregnant:

How much oily fish should I eat?

We should eat at least 1 portion (around 140g when cooked) of oily fish a week.

Oily fish can contain low levels of pollutants that can build up in the body. For this reason, there aremaximum recommendations for the number of portions some groups should be eating each week.

The following people should eat no more than 2 portions of oily fish a week:

-girls
-women who are planning a pregnancy or may have a child one day
-pregnant and breastfeeding women

This is because pollutants found in oily fish may build up in the body and affect the future development of a baby in the womb.

None, it's vile.

HarrisMcCoo · 07/09/2021 07:01

Not enough 😬

torquewench · 07/09/2021 07:06

Currently x5 a week. Today I'm having a tin of sardines for my lunch. I've never had them before. Putting it with a salad. I've a few tins of mackerel also. I also like the John West Tuna Infusions as they're quite handy for a workday lunch with something else (until I buy an office tin opener, anyways).

2catsandhappy · 07/09/2021 21:43

Sardines in olive oil and salad 3-4 times a week all sprinkled with pumpkin seeds. Yummy. Salmon a couple of times a month.
I would eat it more but worry about mercury and over fishing.

25yearsnhsworker · 07/09/2021 21:48

@TonytheDog

Do tinned sardines have bones? I'm always worried about bones.
I am the same, if I find a bone its game over!! I buy smoked mackerel and crush it between my fingers hunting for bones.
Microfibrequeen · 07/09/2021 23:42

25yearsnhsworker. I get M&S boneless sardines. A lot more expensive than other supermarkets but solves the bone issue.
