How much oily fish do you eat in a week?

Instead of supplements I’ve started eating tinned sardines. Guidance from the Heart Foundation and NHS advised at least 2 portions of fish a week one of which is oily. I wouldn’t mind a can of sardines every day as after not having any for years think they’re really tasty. They are supposed to be low mercury too. How many portions are you eating and do you reckon daily is too much?

Rarely. I like mackerel and eat it from time to time but not weekly. To the pp who eats salmon 5-7 times per week, don't you sicken yourself with it?

happystory · 06/09/2021 22:48

Hardly any. Does tuna count. Maybe have that once a month.

FrownedUpon · 06/09/2021 22:49

Twice a week.

It's mackerel season so my husband catches it and we have it pan fried one night and smoked in a salad the next. Free food!

Bawdrip · 06/09/2021 23:22

None since watching seaspiracy. I love salmon, but never again. Plus the Mercury levels and microplastics in fish is alarming. Haven't noticed any change in health since going fish free.

DramaAlpaca · 06/09/2021 23:24

None at all. I can't stand fish. I wish I could eat it but the taste and smell is unbearable to me. So supplements it is.

PickAChew · 06/09/2021 23:27

Once or twice. Love fish but too much oily fish triggers migraines for me.

Silkiescatz · 06/09/2021 23:31

Eat lots of salmon, mainly smoked. The cat is also doing her bit for the tuna industry. 😻

PickAChew · 06/09/2021 23:31

I once worked with someone who had just a, tin of mackerel for lunch, on its own, every single day. Sometimes he'd be daring and have the stuff in mustard sauce.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 06/09/2021 23:33

2-3 a week. Gorgeous stuff.

TheHouseILiveIn · 06/09/2021 23:36

I thought more than one portion a week is bad because of PCBs, so I have one portion a week and take omega 3 supplements. Love mackeral and salmon and could have it every day. If you're pregnant you definitely shouldn't have more than one portion a week. Can affect the baby's nervous system

MountainDweller · 06/09/2021 23:46

One (usually salmon) plus sometimes tuna for lunch (haven't fancied it recently). I take a krill oil supplement too.

todaysdilemma · 06/09/2021 23:47

I have salmon or sardines 3-4 times a week. Since I was a child! Oily fish is a must in my diet as the benefits of omega oils is incredible for memory, skin, bones etc. I don't think it is a coincidence that some of the healthiest/longest living populations in the world eat a lot of fish. I also grew up in a predominantly vegetarian region of the world and the bone degeneration and incidences of dementia in older women was a serious issue. The fishing communities however, did not suffer the same ailments that plagued the rest and research put it down to the fish oils from our diet. As an aside I also get a lot of compliments on my skin and hair and all the women in my fish eating hometown have the same - I think diet has played a part.

Lunde · 06/09/2021 23:49

5-7 times a week

  • quite often have poached/smoked salmon or tinned/smoked mackeral on toast or in a sandwich for lunch
  • sometimes have herrings - rollmops of other jars in sauce with potato
  • once or twice a week we will have either salmon portions fried or baked, oatmeal herrings or panfried mackeral (the latter if dh prepared to do bone removal)

We tend to have white fish once a week as well

moppat · 06/09/2021 23:52

I thought too much was bad?

TSSDNCOP · 06/09/2021 23:56

Salmon at least once a week, sardines on toast for lunch when Wfh

JingsMahBucket · 06/09/2021 23:57

I’m currently at none but used to eat it several times a week. I love good quality canned sardines but go through phrases of not eating them even though I may have several cans in the cupboard. I think it may genuinely be a seasonal or intuitive eating thing for me. When my body craves them and their nutrients, I start eating them.

I’d eat salmon more but I’ve noticed that it’s nearly impossible to get salmon steaks anymore. Every single store only has fillets and not even fillets with the good fat on them at the end. I want the tasty salmon fat you’d get in a steak. I think I may have to start buying directly from a fishmonger and requesting steaks or something. Anybody have a good online fish dealer to recommend?

I still haven’t really tried smoked mackerel just as is but have had an Arbroath smoky which I enjoyed. Maybe winter will see me branch out more. Good question @Attiladahun!

JingsMahBucket · 06/09/2021 23:57

Wait. Just remembered that I eat smoked salmon at least once a week! Duh! I was solely thinking about fresh cooked fish. Whoops.

Dieticians/nutritionists who specialise in pregnancy/breastfeeding disagree with you.

Omega 3's from oily fish are actually crucial for baby's brain development.

You're thinking of tuna.

I only like fresh sardines and cant find them anywhere.

TheHouseILiveIn · 07/09/2021 00:44

Ok, I was wrong with one portion a week...it's two. From this NHS site

TonytheDog · 07/09/2021 01:12

Do tinned sardines have bones? I'm always worried about bones.

LoveFall · 07/09/2021 02:08

I like the sardines in tomato sauce but I have to be in the right mood. Like another poster I am petrified of fish bones. The sardines have them but they are so soft you can't detect them except by sight. They are off-putting if for some reason I am not in the right frame of mind.

I do eat canned tuna about once every two weeks.

I should probably try harder.

LoveFall · 07/09/2021 02:10

When I have sardines it helps to smash them up onto toast or rye crackers. I also like a drop or two of hot sauce on top.

JovialNickname · 07/09/2021 02:40

I try to have it twice a week as recommended, as apparently it boosts brain function - much needed in my case! I'm not always successful but try to have salmon (cooked fillet or smoked) or a little tin of spicy mackerel on toast.
