How much oily fish do you eat in a week?

Instead of supplements I’ve started eating tinned sardines. Guidance from the Heart Foundation and NHS advised at least 2 portions of fish a week one of which is oily. I wouldn’t mind a can of sardines every day as after not having any for years think they’re really tasty. They are supposed to be low mercury too. How many portions are you eating and do you reckon daily is too much?

None.

Sally2791 · 06/09/2021 20:35

Fish oily or otherwise usually twice a week

Tooembarrassingtomention · 06/09/2021 20:37

I eat salmon 5-7 times a week

One large portion of fresh salmon a week - I'd happily eat more (much more!) but DH is not a fan of fish. Sometimes I'll have a tuna steak or two, too, or fresh mackerel in season.

ActonSquirrel · 06/09/2021 20:39

None. I don't like it.

idontlikealdi · 06/09/2021 20:43

Zero. Never ever. Utterly vile stuff.

Port1aCastis · 06/09/2021 20:43

None, I'm allergic to fish

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/09/2021 20:45

None. It makes me physically ill. I almost immediately turn green and throw up, faint.

Bean sprouts do the same thing. A dietitian told me that this is Impossible. She was wrong.

AdaColeman · 06/09/2021 20:47

Probably three or four portions a week, mainly salmon or sardines. I have the sardines on toast or with cous-cous, and the salmon with salad or as an open sandwich with capers, watercress etc.

Chocaholic9 · 06/09/2021 20:49

Salmon 3-4 times per week. Occasionally a tin of sardines for the calcium.

I used to eat it daily. I didn't see any negative side effects

How do you balance the environmental impacts of fishing and fish farming if you eat lots of fish?

Genuine question because I’d like to eat more but always feel guilty.

TheFlis12345 · 06/09/2021 20:52

2-3 times a week, a combination of smoked salmon, peppered mackerel, fresh mackerel and sardines usually.

To be honest, I don't. We try not to eat meat as much as we used to, we don't have kids, never fly anywhere, run one car (living rurally, it's impossible to get to work by public transport, so DH uses the car, I have an electric bike if I need to get into the village) and have no central heating, so that's where we do our bit. A couple of fish dinners a week aren't sitting too heavily on my conscience - especially when some of the fish is caught by friends fishing locally.

Love a tin of sardines in tomato sauce! Always have one in as a snack Grin

Susannahmoody · 06/09/2021 21:06

Probably once every three weeks. I used to eat tons of smoked mackerel but can't stomach it so much these days

SameToo · 06/09/2021 21:13

@Inextremis that’s the main part of my problem. I’m so far from the sea I can’t buy locally. I’d be happier if I could and knew their fishing practices etc.

daytriptovulcan · 06/09/2021 21:16

At least 3 times a week. Really tasty

Attiladahun · 06/09/2021 21:31

Thanks everyone. I think maybe every day might be too much with the sardines. I shall go for more moderation and eat 4 cans a week I think.

I don't like it. I do take omega oils instead

Do they have bones in? For me it's not so much the taste as I'm utterly petrified of bones (not sure why) So I will eat tuna steak and that's about it really. Even fish from the chip shop I will shred it and it takes me ages to eat as I pick through it for bones Used to like smoked mackerel but again.. bones Blush
Bontanics · 06/09/2021 21:35

2 or 3 times a week. Mackrel on toast is a favourite with us.

Attiladahun · 06/09/2021 21:45

Notmycat. M&S do cans of boneless sardines. They’re pricier than normal but if bones are a problem you can get them without. I don’t mind either way and know the bones are good for calcium.

None, have never eaten fish or any kind of seafood. Throwback from my texture phobic early years.

Thanks, I've had a quick browse and found John west do some. I will be brave and try them! Don't know why it's such a phobia
