School holding whole-school assembly

Are your schools holding assemblies at the moment? School have removed all covid protocols. First day back, and all 600 kids were squeezed into the (unventilated) school hall. Seems unnecessarily risky.

I’m pleased the kids are back at school, but why the need for an assembly? (Boring at the best of times! Seems pretty foolhardy at the moment, rates in our area are high)

Are your schools holding assemblies and carrying on as if everything is back to normal?

Whole school assembly, but held outside.

Blowitout · 06/09/2021 17:57

My child’s school had a whole school assembly today and it was the highlight of the day. It was the thing that has been missed most!

So much risk for so little benefit.

Yes its all back to normal

LegendaryReady · 06/09/2021 18:01

The only risk management things still recommended to schools are hand hygiene and ventilation, but even that is "where possible".

HungryHippo11 · 06/09/2021 18:01

@amillionmenonmars

So much risk for so little benefit.
"So much risk" is probably an overstatement given that kids very very rarely get ill from covid and the teachers are vaccinated. Would there be "so much risk" from holding an assembly during normal flu season?

OP schools have removed restrictions on almost everything now, this is pretty common.

Whole school twice a week, key stages twice a week. Outside if possible. They've even brought back celebration and year group assemblies for parents. (although ds1 yr6 has told me only to come if he has a big thing to do, it's not cool anymore Hmm)

Cabbageandpeas · 06/09/2021 18:11

I thought Delta was causing more problems in children? And double-vaxxed are still getting ill. I kind of thought along the lines of ‘little benefit, lots of risk’ too…

The only concessions left are each class has its own designated loo and they come. In and out through their classroom door instead of all out the playground door.

LeonoraFlorence · 06/09/2021 18:13

Ours aren’t and I’m glad as the cases are rapidly rising even without this!

noblegiraffe · 06/09/2021 18:14

Take it up with the government, they have decided that children getting covid is the way forward.

EastWestWhosBest · 06/09/2021 18:16

Yep. If you read the government guidance it’s basically ‘carry on like before’.

I did feel a bit 😕 when I wasn’t allowed in the vets today and had to do everything outside and through masks etc when earlier today I had sat in a packed room with 400 children and 20 adults.

MirandaWest · 06/09/2021 18:17

Mine don’t go back until Wednesday and Thursday. I do know they’re going to encourage mask wearing in communal areas until the end of September at least.
They never have whole school assemblies but there are over 1,500 of them in total so they’d never all fit anywhere.
Will wait and see whether they have year group assemblies or not.

sunshineandshowers40 · 06/09/2021 18:17

My school had a whole school assembly in the hall. Asked my primary aged DC and they said that they had one last week. We have got to learn to live with it.

GherkinsOnToast · 06/09/2021 18:20

Thankfully our school has already said no whole school assemblies! They have also said that until such time as there are more ways of keeping students safe they will have an 'open window' policy - every window in all classrooms will be open as will those in hallways and areas where pupils gather.

Cabbageandpeas · 06/09/2021 18:24

But learning to live with it doesn’t mean we have to pointlessly spread it! We accept that sometimes car journeys have terrible consequences, but we mitigate some of the risk by wearing seatbelts. I figured stuff like not having assemblies was akin to seatbelts/speed limits etc.

Full school assemblies back here. I'm pleased. I want my DC to have a more normal school experience. They are not at risk and neither are teacher imo.

claireymrsd · 06/09/2021 18:35

Yep Term Service tomorrow for all 7 years - so approx 1400 people in the school hall 😫

KateTheEighth · 06/09/2021 18:36

Still no whole school assemblies

Separate areas in the playground still

Masks recommended in class

621CustardCream438 · 06/09/2021 18:36

Yes, they’re having assembly as normal but it’s a one form entry primary school with all the upper windows in the hall open and four sets of double fire doors open to the outside, one in each corner. They aren’t singing indoors though, apparently on singing day they all go out into the playground. I’m ok with it.

LividLaVidaLoca · 06/09/2021 18:36

Covid is over in our school.

250 staff in the hall with not a mask and nary an open window for inset Hmm

Purpletomato · 06/09/2021 18:38

Pre Covid we had ks2 assembly twice a week and ks1 and ks2 together once a week. DC says they've been told today it will now be all Yr 3 to Yr 13 in the same assembly hall twice a week. Seems ridiculous to me, they must be virtually sitting on each other to squeeze them in and surely the assembly is likely to be boring and/or irrelevant to some of the years.

Teeheehee1579 · 06/09/2021 18:40

Yea, thank god back to normal. I am delighted.

Cabbageandpeas · 06/09/2021 18:47

Delighted that your kids have got assembly?! Bloody hell, assemblies must be v different at some of your schools Grin covid-aside, I can’t imagine being delighted my kids are subjected to them!
