School holding whole-school assembly

Are your schools holding assemblies at the moment? School have removed all covid protocols. First day back, and all 600 kids were squeezed into the (unventilated) school hall. Seems unnecessarily risky.

I’m pleased the kids are back at school, but why the need for an assembly? (Boring at the best of times! Seems pretty foolhardy at the moment, rates in our area are high)

Are your schools holding assemblies and carrying on as if everything is back to normal?

The government have never cared about children or staff, so sitting in an assembly doesn't bother me.
It's no more riskier than the previous 'guidance' in schools.

FrippEnos · 06/09/2021 19:07

Yup. All covid measures removed, all back to SNAFU

Goldenbear · 06/09/2021 19:12

Everything back to normal here.

I am happy you are happy that assemblies are back. Hope you are all happy when lots of kids, and more importantly teachers have covid. Assemblies are not important . Being in class is. When teachers are ill they need supply cover. This is in very short supply and it is expensive. But, nevermind - let assemblies commence.

BettyAndFrank · 06/09/2021 19:29

Madness 😡

IDontThinkSoNo · 06/09/2021 19:31

@Thislittlefinger123

Full school assemblies back here. I'm pleased. I want my DC to have a more normal school experience. They are not at risk and neither are teacher imo.

They are recorded at our school and are shown during form time.

Nuffaluff · 06/09/2021 19:35

My head (I am a teacher) is keeping several measures in place.
We had a whole school assembly via zoom today. We are still sticking with year group bubbles.
She told us today that there is a lot of pressure from above (i.e. the government) to go completely back to normal. Not just ‘oh it’s fine to reduce measures if you want’, but ‘things should return to normal’.
They want it to spread through the school population.

GreenLakes · 06/09/2021 22:12

DH is headteacher at a free school and his place is almost totally back to normal- he has been very clear that all staff are to create as normal an environment as possible.

Common sense measures like windows open and hand gel are in place. Otherwise it’s whole school assemblies (1200 students today), no masks and no social distancing.

DH believes that DC have suffered quite enough as it is.

AledsiPad · 06/09/2021 22:30

Yes, thank fuck. Move on.

paradyning · 06/09/2021 22:33

Yea thank fuck. Move on. Sibling brings back covid to CEV sibling.
Payproblems · 06/09/2021 22:33

Oh yes, all protocols have beeb dropped!!
No masks at all and students have been asked to do lateral flows. Most don't do them of course and even when they do they don't log them.
As far as schools go, covid is over, well and truly over. There is nothing in place to stop covid.
One part of me feels good, it's great to be back to normal, the children can settle into their new year's, see theirs friends faces and have some carers free time.
But the other part of me is so worried about this silent build and build and build of cases again and I worry about what we are heading too.

Payproblems · 06/09/2021 22:38

Re learning to live with it, in personally happy to do but does that then mean learning to live with out hospital cover for everything?

Evesgarden · 06/09/2021 22:39

Yes, full school primary assembly. The school posted a photo from the back of the children on their instagram account. Both dds said it was fun. Im sure the novelty will wear off though!

Every thing has gone back to normal - no restrictions.

I am glad

paradyning · 06/09/2021 22:41

And sacrificing the unvaccinated (as they cannot be not due to antivax) such as

Evesgarden · 06/09/2021 22:41

But they could literally do that with anything - not just covid.

spartanthehorse · 06/09/2021 22:42

Yes, all restrictions have been removed. My son had a whole school assembly on the first day back.

Wow, I started the thread feeling relatively neutral, but I don’t think I’ve ever felt so angry as reading this post. How dare your husband deliberately put children, teachers and their families at risk like this.

My friend’s son (aged 7) certainly “suffered enough” when his dad spent weeks in ICU and continues to suffer now that dad is unable to work because of long covid complications. The 7 year olds doesn’t suffer less because we remove sensible, moderate precautions

Let then have the same school experiences we did, let them have fun let them be kids, stop putting your anxiety on them

MeredithGreyishblue · 06/09/2021 22:52

Yes in primary. Quite a small single form entry school. Sub 200 kids. Windows & doors open.

It doesn't bother me but I can see why some people are still cautious.

paradyning · 06/09/2021 22:53

@Evesgarden thank for the explanation. I know all about population risk versus individual risk. And I know which way the government has gone.

MoiraNotRuby · 06/09/2021 22:57

Assemblies are not fun! Why not save the riskier moments for things less dull than frigging assemblies. The most boring part of school.

Evesgarden · 06/09/2021 22:59

The are following the advice of the the scientific advisors which know more about it than you or me. They have used the data from the USA where young children have been vaccinated and considered the very small risk of heart complications that some children have experienced after having the second vaccine. They have weighed that up against the fact that's its very rare for children to have complications from covid.

Young children certainly have not been sacrificed.

Its been good enough to follow their advice over every single other thing - but not this?

TSSDNCOP · 06/09/2021 23:00

That is DfE guidance,
