Washing machine

My nearly 18 year old Whirlpool washing machine has died and before I order a new one thought I would ask if anyone can recommend a good make/model that doesn't cost mega bucks? I'm flicking through pages of washing machines on Curry's website and they all look pretty much the same.

Any advice would be much appreciated,

Many thanks.

We can see this thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best washing machine page with lots of great options tried and tested by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

I’ve just got a Candy (with WiFi for god knows what reason!) and it’s great. Fast washes that get stuff clean, good programs, not loud and doesn’t have an annoying beep when it’s finished! I think it was £380 so not bad tbh. I recommend!

AvoidingNextdoorNeighbour · 06/09/2021 10:56

I can't really recommend one but I can say do not buy a Hoover dynamic Next.

Okay it's not terrible when it's working, it's got a huge drum, short proper wash (59 minutes), rapid washes or 14, 30 and 44 minutes, and super long washes and the clothes come out so clean, BUT, I don't think it's put together that well. The button panel isn't attached securely so over a period of time the buttons push in and you have to open the top up and pop the panel back and screw in tighter (I added extra screws to the empty screw holes too) and Ww push all the wires and clips. That doesn't seem to do anything as far as we can see but it makes the machine work first time again so my guess is the insides loosen over time.

Stupid bloody machine.

SylvanasWindrunner · 06/09/2021 11:01

Our Bosch is great. Used every day and still going strong!

Crankley · 06/09/2021 11:27

Thanks.

Ostryga according to Currys, the wifi allows you to control the machine from your phone!

AvoidingNextdoorNeighbour will avoid Hoover, ty.

SylvanasWindrunner Will take a look at Bosch - ty.

Appliances Online have been great for this we have found.

Rank them all in order of price, size, colour or what ever you want and they normally have a video to show what they are like - pluses and minuses.

Buy on line and gets delivered to your door within days

CoffeeBeansGalore · 06/09/2021 11:34

Earlier this year bought my first ever Miele. £520 so the cheaper end of their range. Can't fault it. Quietest machine I've ever had, decent spin, washes well, various programmes you can halve the time as well.

Previously had a Hisense. Never worked properly, noisy, dreadful spin, leaked, motor & pump went just after 12 months. Gave up after 2 years & bought the Miele.

ToastieWarm · 06/09/2021 11:37

Make sure it has a filter you can access from the front. Our got clogged and I had to tip it on its side to access, ended up having to call an engineer anyway! Also a drawer with 3 compartments for washing powder, softener and vanish (if used).

Felix125 · 06/09/2021 11:45

Has anyone got one with a door at the front that you can add the odd forgotten sock half way through the wash? And do you ever use the feature?

It seemed like an expensive gimmick to me when they came out

Champersandchocolate · 06/09/2021 11:46

@Crankley I have a Candy I think 7 or 8kg I really rate it. I have the 9kg tumble dryer to go with it

All this.

I buy everything from Appliances online. They're usually the cheapest you can find too.

If you go through boots large appliances section they're the same company but you can earn boots advantage points on AO items too.

Crankley · 06/09/2021 12:11

Thank you for all your suggestions.

Do AO install when they deliver and take away old one? I'm disabled and have no chance of manhandling a washing machine.

Bosch really a great machine

dementedpixie · 06/09/2021 12:14

Yes, I think you can pay extra for them to install and take away your old machine

ChequerBoard · 06/09/2021 12:17

Samsung all the way.

I was skeptical when we first bought our Samsung as we had a Miele previously but that became uneconomical to repair. The Samsung washes even better than the Mike's and has never put a foot wrong.

Just about to re-do our kitchen and scullery so I've ordered a matching washing machine & tumble drier from Samsung and am putting the existing Samsung in our annexe.

Look at Costco - just ordered our new a
Series 9 Samsung from there at an amazing special offer price of £574 when it's £879 on AO and Curry's. It's 1600 spin sired, has the add wash feature and is wifi enabled do you can control via the Samsung app.

idontlikealdi · 06/09/2021 12:22

We've got a Samsung, almost 15 years old and I really rate which will probably die on me now I've said that

I'll definitely replace it with another Samsung when I need to.

TwooThirty · 06/09/2021 12:22

I’m also looking at washing machines at the moment and must have read so many reviews. So many bad reviews on Curry’s for broken machines and Curry’s being difficult about fixing/replacing whereas any broken machine review on AO was singing the praises of AO for their customer service.

AvoidingNextdoorNeighbour · 06/09/2021 12:23

Yeah AO offer an installation and disposal service. It's really well priced too. Often places will gouge you on that but AO are decent.

TwooThirty · 06/09/2021 12:25

For those with WiFi/Bluetooth washing machines: is that so you can start the machine while you’re still at work or something?

I can’t see the point in it personally. I wouldn’t risk having the machine on with no one in the house in case of fire. Am I missing something though?

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 06/09/2021 12:27

we have the bottom of the range Bosch and it's great. Prior to that we had the previous bottom of the range Bosch, and got 15 years out of that. I wash daily, sometimes more than once, as we don't have a drier so it suits me better to wash little and often as easier to line dry smaller loads.

roses2 · 06/09/2021 12:27

I would look for feedback on anyone that has a machine that is 3 years old max. Newer machines are not the same quality as they were 5 years ago and any feedback you read here from someone who says "I love my Bosch" - ask them how old it is.

If ~£350 is in your budget then you can buy either an LG or Samsung with 5 years warranty. The LG has better Which reviews for long term reliability.

Mabelface · 06/09/2021 12:27

I have the hoover dynamic next. 6 years in it's still working wonderfully.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 06/09/2021 12:29

I should add ours does a delayed start (not bluetooth just a timer), and you can open after it's started if you need to add a forgotten item.

ChequerBoard · 06/09/2021 12:31

The wifi feature is useful as you can check how long it left to go with the cycle and it will alert you when the washing is finished. It's also easy to use to set the machine going and clearer to understand than fiddling with the dials.

We have the Samsung series 9 tumble drier too - bought that slightly earlier than the WM as our old TD died. I can put a load of towels in, set it going on the 'fluffy towels' programme and the app will tell me when the cycle has finished and estimate how long until they are fully dry. So I can put them on for a bit longer without going and checking the machine. Actually thought the whole app thing was a bit of a gimmick but it's proving to be really useful.

SylvanasWindrunner · 06/09/2021 12:46

Our Bosch is four years old in November (we don't celebrate its birthday, I just remember as we got it when we moved in to this house!) and still going strong. Have never had any problems, and it is in heavy use. We did reusable nappies so it was on every day, sometimes twice, and we also had two cats and a dog so had a lot of pet blankets and things to wash.

It's not got WiFi or anything fancy like that, but it just work and the clothes come out clean and uncreased.

We have a Beko tumble drier which is surprisingly good considering how cheap it was. It's the same age as washing machine and also used heavily.

Granllanog · 06/09/2021 12:55

My cheapie Beko has been amazing..........recommended to me by a washing machine repair engineer when my old machine died. I've had it for a least 12 years, many friends who have also bought Beko have been pleased. I love the quick wash programme as you can select the temp and spin........I used a machine on holiday this year and it seemed to take hours!!! I would have already had two loads on the line by then
