York.. Shopping

I'm going to York for the weekend and just wondered what it's like for shopping.. Specifically shoes and clothes, as I'm worried that, as with many cities, the pandemic has necessitated the closure of many shops. Thanks in advance.

I've just come back from a couple of days in York, there seemed to be a good mix of shops - mainstream high street shops like Next, Zara, New Look etc, as well as lots of smaller boutiques. No department stores though (or not that I saw) - Debenhams and John Lewis both closed down.

HalfwomanHalfcookie · 05/09/2021 14:31

There's a Fenwick department store near the Jorvik museum I think.
York is pretty good for shopping I'd say.

CliftonGreenYork · 05/09/2021 14:32

Hi I live in York. We have 2 smallesh department Stores, Browns and also a Fenwicks. We also have a massive Designer Outlet Shopping Park just outside the town and it has 100s of shops.

Mammyloveswine · 05/09/2021 14:34

It's shit in the centre now but the designer outlet is quite good and there's monks cross shopping outlet too,

Think there's a big John Lewis out of town now too.

The centre is great though for food and drinks!

Missatkins · 05/09/2021 14:35

That's great.. Thank you so much. Also, we're staying at the Grand - is that in walking distance of the city centre?

We found that York city centre good for restaurants and pubs but not for shopping. The Outlet Village was great though.

StupidBlanket · 05/09/2021 14:50

@Mammyloveswine John Lewis was closed down, unfortunately!

York's still pretty good for shopping, as long as you're not after a particular piece. I think that's universal for most physical outlets though, what with online shopping!

Mammyloveswine · 06/09/2021 07:15

Ah never @StupidBlanket ! Wonder why?

I'm probs biased now as I live in Newcastle these so have the metro centre to hand for shopping!

Op yes the grand is close to the centre Smile

Northernlurker · 06/09/2021 07:24

The John Lewis has been closed for months, never reopened after Christmas. The shopping is still a lot better than many towns OP.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 06/09/2021 07:28

Yea you can walk easily from the grand. The city centre has lots of shops. Stone gate is good for branded shops.

Monks cross is shocking now. They have a primark but otherwise not worth visiting unless you want to go to the big next at the retail park next to it.

The designer outlet is a MacArthur glen so google it for store list and there are buses that go to it regularly from the city centre.

SallyOMalley · 06/09/2021 07:31

To get to the designer outlet by bus, you need the number 7 Park and Ride service - they leave every 10 mins or so from Clifford Street (I think!).

RodeoGorilla · 06/09/2021 07:41

There are loads of shops in the city centre, you just need to know where to look. If you’re staying at the Grand then the concierge will definitely be able to help show you.

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions.
