This is for watching on a laptop? Mostly watching Netflix/youtube/C4/ITV anyway

That sounds right to me, and I'm also wary of the idea that someone just happens to not need a Licence because of their existing viewing habits, rather than the more robust situation of keeping viewing habits to the legally Licence-free rules.

My dd just checked up on it because she wants to watch Strictly, Bake off and Taskmaster... family favourites from the start... all traditionally start end Sept when the nights start drawing in. She will do the unplugged... or watch non bbc ones on catch up.

How will they know if a laptop is plugged in or not?

Thanks for all the replies. It actually seems a bit of a minefield. I'd be interested to know if anyone does buy a separate licence for watching on a laptop? It's a lot of money. I don't know how the rules are enforceable though either eg the plugged in aspect.

We used to get letters in halls; we ignored them

As long as they aren’t watching live telly, they don’t need one.

My student DC only really watch Netflix, Prime or iPlayer.

They don't - unless they see it when they call, or they ask and the student tells them.

@Flogert
That’s the best way.
They are impotent and they know it, No matter how much confusing and frankly misleading information they spout on their threatograms. Ignore the ‘enforcers’ if they knock at your door too. they are not the Stasi they are salesman.
I am in no way condoning licence evasion but there are a huge amount of people that could be legitimately licence free.
