How can I get a 'private' email address?

Please don't laugh! :-) I may make a tit of myself even trying to describe my issue, here!

I am really non techy but my family, DH in particular, are hugely into tech and understand it all. My 'excuse' is that I'm almost 60.

DH and I have a very 'open' relationship when it comes to online, in that at a tiny click, he can see my emails, I can see his.
They're all gmail accounts. The thought behind it is that we have 'nothing to hide', I guess, though we've only talked about it once when a mate of mine who'd been emailing me was horrified to discover that, at that stage DH and I shared an email address! DH set up another just for me but anyone sitting here can log on and read any of my emails.

I have 'several' email addresses (which is a nuisance in itself); and use them for slightly different purposes. Some are no longer function which irritates me, but DH just 'moves on' to a new provider. Hence now gmail.

If you open our inbox, it'll open the default mailbox, but go top right hand corner, the 'account signed in' button, and that allows you to check any of the inboxes.

I want to email someone about slightly private business, and I just really don't want anyone else being able to casually open that mailbox, but -and here's the embarrassing thing- I have no idea how to set that inbox up so only I can open it! And I don't know how I would open it!

I will post (blurred) pictures if that helps.

And no, I can't ask DH to do it.

Do you have a smartphone or are you only using a shared laptop /tablet/desktop?

Cherrysoup · 04/09/2021 17:28

In the search function on Google, type in outlook. You can then create a new account. (Used to be called hotmail) Ensure you choose a memorable but different password to what you use now. Don’t leave this account open when you have finished using the email, so whatever device you’re using, ensure you quit it, not just log out. Press the little x top corner.

MrsSchrute · 04/09/2021 17:29

Can you just change the password on one of your existing email accounts? That way noone else would be able to access it.

FlamingGoat · 04/09/2021 17:29

Have you got a smart phone?
Just set up a yahoo account on it with a password only you know and keep it logged out and the remember me box unchecked.

MurielSpriggs · 04/09/2021 17:30

I would say: in your web browser go to a completely different email provider (eg www.outlook.com ), and register there. When you want to check that about login to the same website via your browser. Make sure that you don't allow the browser to save the password on your PC. To be a bit safer use the browser on your phone rather than your PC.

Can you just create a new email address (pick your provider) and not save the password on the machine? Yahoo, Hotmail, outlook?

Or Protonmail if you want something really secure and are worried about it being intercepted somehow.

I would open a private page on iPhone if you click at bottom page it gives you option. This way it not show in history nor will it look strange if you delete history for the day or week. Then just sign up to a new address. At the very least I wouldn’t want email or Amazon “your parcels” being delivered if you are buying Xmas presents for the other person. Having someone reading emails any time would be annoying

BluebellsGreenbells · 04/09/2021 17:33

If on your phone down load an email app.

Create an account

You can sign in and out of it using a password or Face ID depends on your phone

Has the OP said she's using an iphone, I can't see that so better if you tell us @Fordian what device you are using and which browser then you can get specific step by step instructions

Every one should have acces to their own email address so let's get you set up

Hi, I've not studied all the really helpful replies! Yet!

I have an iPhone and an iPad, though that was actually supplied to my DH for work, but he has no use for it thus it's 'mine' but at any moment, he could take it back for work.

I'll read all answers properly tomorrow.
