Will I use cardamom pods? (Or recipe ideas please!)

I'm just checking my Sainsbury's substitutions (I lead an exciting life). I'd ordered caraway seeds, and they've subbed cardamom pods. I was going to refuse them, but now I have FOMO!

I like the flavour (I was very sad when Tampopo stopped doing cardamom ice cream because it was gorgeous). I'm a pretty good cook, I just don't think I've needed them before. What exciting things can I make with cardamom pods? Or should I just send them back and stop overthinking? Grin

Cinnamon buns! Lots of recipes use both cinnamon and cardamom.

Mozzers · 03/09/2021 16:51

I use them to flavour basmati rice when I'm making a curry. Three or four pods for two of us. I take them out before I serve the rice.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/09/2021 16:53

They add a subtle flavour to pilau rice but you can never find them when it's ready and someone then gets them in their dinner.

Crap substitute for caraway seeds though. Sainsbury's pickers obviously not into cooking.

I use them in rice and leave them in as they can be eaten once they're cooked. The kids pick them out and put them on my plate as I love them.

You could always make chai lattes or chai tea at home.

I have actually just ordered more cardamom pods as it's started to feel a bit more autumn-y where I am and chai is the perfect drink to cuddle up with a book and a fuzzy blanket on a crisp autumn/winter day.

"It's a spice, and it begins with C, and it isn't ground — perfect!" Grin

I think I'll accept them (thank you for all the ideas Flowers), but might say that they're not a very good substitute.

Unlike the orange squash I've been given instead of blackcurrant, that's going straight back. Possibly my fault for ordering a fancier one (Rock's) so they've matched the brand rather than the flavour, but I'd have been happy with Ribena!

They get used in Biryani and kedgeree here.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 03/09/2021 17:06

I'm very grateful to the pickers, and I know it's at least in part the fault of the algorithm. But substitutions do seem a bit the luck of the draw!

Roast some stone fruits with a few crushed pods, serve with ice cream for dessert or yoghurt for breakfast.

ReviewingTheSituation · 03/09/2021 17:12

Gin! Put them in gin!

And rice. And curries. And some cake recipes. They're a store cupboard staple here.

Cardamom rice pudding

DeviousLatte · 03/09/2021 17:16

Can also be used to flavor coffee.
I also like them with apples, or in fact most dessert where you add cinnamon, can add cardamom too IMHO

DinosApple · 03/09/2021 17:20

Rice and curry here.

Doomscrolling · 03/09/2021 17:24

So good in cinnamon rolls, rice pudding, actual rice, lots of curries.

MadMadMadamMim · 03/09/2021 17:26

I highly recommend Nadiya's rice tray bake. The cardamom rice is brilliant.

Ottolenghi cardamom rice baked with chicken thighs is on my desert island dinner party menu! It's in the Jerusalem cookbook.

CorpusCallosum · 03/09/2021 17:43

My mum makes the most delicious orange and cardamom cake. It's one of my favourite flavours and always add waaaay more pods than it says to for currys cause I love the surprise of biting into one 😋

NewNameADayKeepsSpiesAtBay · 03/09/2021 17:49

I had an amazing cardamom bun from a local posh bakery today. So delicious. Make buns with your pods OP. And maybe try to make ice cream with the rest, bet that’d be lovely.

FeltCarrot · 03/09/2021 18:00

Cardamom and onion stuffing - fabulous with roast chicken.

SirVixofVixHall · 03/09/2021 18:02

Mmm buns. Cardamom cake is amazing with coffee, my Swedish friend makes it.
Another friend grinds the seeds along with coffee to make Cardamom coffee which is delicious.
