Ideas for Halloween Birthday Party!

Eeve · 03/09/2021 14:52

DD will be 9 around halloween and as she loves Halloween has requested a themed birthday party at home.

I've never done a party at home so feel a bit out of my depth!

Any ideas of how to make it fun??

I did a little spooky trail around the garden with clues. They had to take torches and go into slightly scary corners of the garden and shed. There was a bucket of goo to put your hand in and a box with a hole cut out and leaves and stuff inside. They had to reach in to get the clue.
They had a treasure map as the last clue and dug up a Tupperware box of sweets to share out as the treasure. I bought stuff cheap like a bat to hang up and a rubber dead hand as clues.
You can theme lots of traditional party games in a spooky way and decorate cupcakes with spiders in black icing.
Apple bobbing being a spare t shirt for that one.

Oooh! That does sound like fun!

I like the various apple ideas that @JennaPenna said.

Also, years ago I made pumpkin and cinamon donuts that worked out really well and were delicious. It was a Cherry Menlove recipe from ages back when she was the blogger all MN loved to hate but I cannot seem to find it now. I bought her book though and it may have been in there.

Pin the nose on the witch game, instead of pin the tail on the donkey.

How many are you hosting for ?

Hallowe'en Games :
Things in a box - they put their hand in to feel .

Mashed potatoe , wizened carrots with rice crispies glued on, cold spagehetti ......and the last one your hand Grin

Eating jellly without using your hands . Small jelley on a paper plate , dig in

Donoughts on a string , no hands

99p dolls pull the legs/arms/hands off , put in soapy water in a bucket and you find the body parts and re-assemble

Turn Daddy into a Mummy . Wrap someone in looroll fastest time wins . No bodypart left uncovered . We got a family member to wrap round the bum or the "Mummy" does that bit themselves first .

Get some music downloaded and some witches /monster laughing

LED candles in jars , wrapped in coloured tissue paper to make safe lamps

We changed the lampshades for one of those big paper ones covered in coloured tissue or you could get a colour change bulb

One year I decorated the front room with 'scene setters' ( creepy forest or similar) and the toilet with bloody handprints stickers

Decorate out the front
Pumpkins ,
Glo sticks pushed into loo roll tubes with 'eyes'cut out , hide in bushes
Giant spider in webbing

A film (short one) to calm them down a bit

What food are you having ?

Do you think I need some kind of entertainer or can I do it all myself?? I'm a complete novice for kids parties!

I think I'd do it myself!
Just write a timetable of when to do each activity, enough time for food etc.
And of course making sure they aren't there hours 😂

If the party is after dark and your garden isn’t a death trap, a spooky walk is fun. I made dancing witches from sticks, polystyrene balls, and black sacks. The dc were taken aback when they saw it in daylight because it was properly spooky in the dark. If you have any old phones or MP3 players you can download spooky sound effects and flickering led candles look great. I wrapped some battery operated fairy lights in orange tissue and set them to flash randomly to create flames under a cauldron.

It’s easy to rig a shed door so that something swings forward as you open it. We had a ghost but you could have anything really.

We also had apples on strings so when they reached up to pick one, something moved somewhere else. Once they’re on edge anything gets a scream!

A sheet of tinfoil in the wind sounds very creepy and a shredded bin bag for them to pass through at face height is terrifying! Just put something down low to take their attention so they don’t see what they’re walking into.

Poundland had sensor door mats that screamed when stepped on. Perfect for the garden.

And for extra scares have someone dress in black and hide in a corner and jump out or reach out and grab!

They also usually have wine bottle stickers. I’ve bought their glass bottles too and filled them with a selection of potions (squash, fruit juice, sparkling water) for the dc to mix their own concoctions. On the back of the labels I wrote poison warnings or side effects so they didn’t see them until the bottle was half empty!

If you draw spiders on glasses with a sharpie it washes off in the dishwasher. We also put grey pillowcases over the chairs and decorated them as tomb stones with the guests names.

A skeleton is an excellent dinner guest if you have one.

We played a catch the ghost game - ghosts were white paper folded and cut like ghosts with a penny sealed inside. They were all over the house behind picture frames, peeping out of book shelves etc. Just looking like decorations for first half of party. Then we gave the dc wands (chopsticks with magnet glued on) and they went ghost hunting and had to fish out the ghost (no fingers - only using the wand) and put them in a box. Kept them busy for a good while as they knew there were 40 to find and hunted down every last one.

I have to add don’t put some creepy old ceramic faced dolls from an auction as part of the trail! Grin
One little girl was terrified and we had to make sure they were never seen again!

There's a game where you tell a spooky story in the dark and get them to put their hands into bowls of various foods related to the story (spaghetti worms, lychee eyeballs etc).
