Do they pay it at their home address or their term time address ?

Uni students are exempt from council tax so neither

GoodnightGrandma · 02/09/2021 10:32

This. They get a council tax exemption certificate from the uni. They can then present that to the council at their permanent place of residence.

Students aren’t liable for council tax (in England anyway).

It does for full time courses

It includes postgraduate students as long as they are studying full time.

If they live with non-students, it is a bit more complicated. The student isn't held liable for council tax by the council. However, their housemates might not feel it makes them exempt from paying their share of the bill. There is no reduction in council tax for the household unless there are only 2 adults sharing (with 1 of them a full time student), in which case they can claim the 25% single person discount. That means that it is their housemates who are subsidising the student, not the council.

Thanks. I’ve got one at Uni and one at college, so I was wondering if I could claim the single person occupancy reduction.

@GoodnightGrandma yes you can! I had two at uni and one in the forces only coming home at weekends and my council allow me to claim SP allowance. Middle child is now in a flat share with 2 students so was a bit shocked when he had to pay council tax!

Thanks everyone

Yes. My daughter is in this position. She and two friends have just moved into a flat in London. She and one of the others are doing a Masters. The other will be working.

They have agreed to share the council tax three ways (but they will pay a reduced rate because there is officially only one council tax payer).

I did not pay council tax until I finished my Ph.d.
