Are you stockpiling?

Are you stockpiling food, clothes, toys, medicines? I’ve gotten a bit worried lately with the news of price increases and limited supplies. Shelves seem fairly full where I am (London) but perhaps that’s not going to last? Can’t help but notice much of my food comes from abroad, not to mention medicines, DC clothes and toys, etc.

I’m a bit skint already but if prices will rise and I can do a bit of Christmas shopping for DC now I reckon I’d rather have it sorted.

Not this shite again

Journeynotdestination · 01/09/2021 23:24

@Dreamzzs 😆

SpindleWhorl · 01/09/2021 23:28

I've seen prices rise, yes.

I think keeping a sensible stock at home is a good idea, in case you can't get out for 7-10 days, for example, or there are temporary shortages of something your child with ASD will only eat, or you are on a very restrictive medical diet.

Of course medicines are a worry, especially for people on things like immunosuppressive drugs, pain relief, and heart & thyroid treatments. You can't just 'have a break' for a few weeks, like they're Walkers crisps.

WorraLiberty · 01/09/2021 23:31

Yes, 300 Oxo cubes and counting.

DramaAlpaca · 01/09/2021 23:33

At the last count I had 550 loo rolls in my spare room.

dreamingbohemian · 01/09/2021 23:34

Not stockpiling per se, but getting a bit extra whenever I do a shop

Thinking of getting main Xmas gift for DS now just in case

thistimelastweek · 01/09/2021 23:36

3 turkeys in the freezer

You have to worry about Christmas.

SpindleWhorl · 01/09/2021 23:36

@DramaAlpaca

At the last count I had 550 loo rolls in my spare room.
Thats, erm, impressive.
MissCruellaDeVil · 01/09/2021 23:37

No because I'm not a selfish arse who drives the prices up.

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 01/09/2021 23:38

No of course not.

Are you a former Brexit stockpiler? I suppose the habit is hard to break...

DucksFlyTogether · 01/09/2021 23:40

No.

Stop it. It's not necessary, what are you really going to do with the £50 of extra tins in your cupboard in 6 months time...

Buy what you need, when you need it. Don't be selfish. Some low income families can literally only afford their weekly shop and can't buy extra. They need that food on the shelves, not in your Armageddon pantry....

Goldbar · 01/09/2021 23:40

Yes. We can't get in the door for toilet rolls (have to climb through the window). We bought so many that they sent us the Andrex puppy as well so now we also need to stockpile dog food (DH has several cans under his pillow). We are keeping three live salmon in the bathtub in case the army welds us into the house, but DC has given them names so it's going to be difficult to DTD when the time comes. I have also bought up the entire online stock of Fortnum and Mason's Rose and Violet creams in case things get really bad... cost an arm and a leg but it's good to be prepared.

TableFlowerss · 01/09/2021 23:45

No I’m not 🤣

TheChosenTwo · 01/09/2021 23:46

Absolutely not.
I keep a sensible amount of food in the house at all times, maybe 3/4 days of nice meals, a few days of more random ones and then some freezer meals.
I read threads during the peak of the pandemic or more specifically after the pandemic where people were rotating tonnes of tins, packets and jars of so much excess stock that had contributed to the minesweeping of shelves.
Selfish and unnecessary. We will always have access to food. Maybe not always exactly what you’d want to eat, it’s possible that you’ll need to make a compromise but it’s a risk I’d rather take than end up eating shit like tinned ravioli ‘because I bought it in case of emergency and it needs eating’.
Regarding clothes and toys, I don’t really understand why you would need to stockpile those.
And none of us take routine medication, there’s half a sticky bottle of calpol in the cupboard and a few odd half empty packets of various tablets but we are fortunately healthy enough not to need anything specific so again, no to stockpiling.

anappleadaykeeps · 01/09/2021 23:46

Yes - Diet Coke, mayonnaise and Becks Blue 0% beer.

SpindleWhorl · 01/09/2021 23:48

I had quite a lot in for Brexit, and then Covid happened.

This is what I did with it.

I gave some to an older neighbour who lives on her own, was shielding, and who had run out of essentials for the first time in her life.

I gave some to my young adult DSS and his DP who found themselves broke.

I gave some to the food bank.

I used the rest to feed myself and my son, because I was shielding too for a long time.

I didn't 'stockpile' - just prepared. I didn't 'panic buy' - I'd already bought it gradually, and the UK 'JIT' system will have absorbed this. I was happy to help people.

DramaAlpaca · 01/09/2021 23:49

@SpindleWhorl I was joking about the loo rolls Grin

LittleCatDog · 01/09/2021 23:50

GrinGrin some of these are really making me laugh. The Salmon in the bath and the Becks Blue haha

thistimelastweek · 01/09/2021 23:51

OK it's easy to.mock. Check out my cheap joke above.

But not everyone is in the same place.

OP I apologise. Worrying doesn't make you selfish or silly.

Plan for Christmas as best you can

SpindleWhorl · 01/09/2021 23:51
@SpindleWhorl I was joking about the loo rolls Grin
Thank fuck for that Grin

I was picturing 10 Cloverfield Lane there for a minute.

BluebellsGreenbells · 01/09/2021 23:51

I think there will be shortages around Christmas and people will be complaining they can’t buy there usual mint sauce and Christmas will be ruined!

I think supermarkets will have limited choice which will lead to a reduction in items available.

You can see it now on menus and down shelves here are empty of certain brands/flavors.

I think what needs to change is our attitude to want it but it - and be more flexible and less consumerism driven.

Hillary17 · 01/09/2021 23:52

No. I really can’t be bothered to hoard stuff at home for a what if scenario that might never happen. If I see something someone will like for Christmas maybe I’d get it to be organised but never with food. We didn’t stock pile for the toilet drama and we’re fine, didn’t have to use leaves once.

NinaGonk · 01/09/2021 23:52

I do start buying kids xmas presents from now regardless of pandemics. Just helps spread the cost and avoid last minute panic.

But no I'm not stockpiling in the style of early covid craziness.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 01/09/2021 23:53

No because I'm not a dick

Letsgetquizzy · 01/09/2021 23:53

No. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy otherwise.

DC also have a habit of deciding what they are want right before Christmas, so no incentive to buy early in normal times.
