Anyone else noticed a sudden influx of the bastards? Was just on my knees emptying the washing machine when one the size of a mouse I swear appeared from underneath the machine. Fecking bastard. I need to burn the utility room now don't I? Are they taking over? They are bloody everywhere at the moment.

@MrsSkylerWhite

Would it change anyone’s opinions if I told you that:

A rope of spider silk as thick as a pencil could stop a Boeing 747 mid flight and:

Spider silk is tougher than Kevlar, the material used for bullet proof vests

Love them or hate them, awesome, yes?

That is awesome and their webs are truly amazing too. I wish I didn’t have a phobia about them. I would never kill one though.

There are always huge spiders at this time of year. I don't know if this is true but someone told me that the really big ones are pregnant females.

The females have big bums.

Without spiders we would be drowning in other insects - flies, moths, mozzies, gnats etc. The amount of insect biomass they consume is immense. They are a crucial part of the food chain and many species rely on them as food. Even if you fear them, you still benefit from their presence. Just pop them outside if you can’t deal.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 02/09/2021 10:08

@Bellagonna

I genuinely think if extinction rebellion led with the fact we will get more of these bastards with warmer temperatures they'd be a lot more successful with their campaigns.
But that’s not true is it? They start to come inside in the autumn as it gets colder outside I thought.
Bellagonna · 02/09/2021 15:59

But hotter countries have bigger spiders. So when they do come inside they'll be as big as a car.

Although maybe we could strap a saddle to them and reduce our emissions that way. They'd only require us sacrifice one or two children a week to feed from.

If possible I carefully remove spiders and put them outside.

That’ll probably kill them too. They’re house spiders.
thenewduchessofhastings · 02/09/2021 18:15

Cellar spiders are amazing;they eat the huge house spiders.They can take over my house if they the huge house spiders away

jaundicedoutlook · 02/09/2021 19:41

We have a fairly healthy crop of the buggers in the house at the moment.

If they look fairly sedentary and they’re not too ginormous / repulsive and if they’re not in direct reach of my hair/face then I tend to leave them alone.

If they don’t fit the above criteria and they are within reach then I tend to point the cat at them, who will usually eat them. That, in itself, is quite grim but marginally better than the alternative.

I’ve heard this too, but I don’t understand how it happens. It’s like a cat eating a horse.
ZoyaTheDestroyer · 02/09/2021 20:09

This doesn’t feel like the thread to share them but there are pictures online if you Google.
