Massive spiders that have no business existing.

Anyone else noticed a sudden influx of the bastards? Was just on my knees emptying the washing machine when one the size of a mouse I swear appeared from underneath the machine. Fecking bastard. I need to burn the utility room now don't I? Are they taking over? They are bloody everywhere at the moment.

Ah thank God you were here sarahlou! It's not as if two of us have already said we removed them rather than killing them...oh wait...

Lillipops · 31/08/2021 22:59

I was held hostage in the bathroom the other night by one of these massive critters. I would've seen it sooner but we have black floor tiles..it was the shadow on the wall tile that alerted me to his presence. DP dispatched him, boy those things can move!! Confused massive hairy legs eek

Porridgeislife · 31/08/2021 23:00

Ugh. I was sitting at my wfh desk early one morning earlier in the summer & felt something tickling in my leggings. I decided to peel them off & out popped a very miffed house spider. He’d made himself at home in my clean laundry basket. Neither of us was injured by the incident as far as I can tell.

The spider pictured above is fairly small relative to the toilet spiders I grew up with - huntsmen - which are the size of your outstretched hand, but harmless. They’d often just take up residence in the loo for weeks at a time.

Fluffyandsilly · 31/08/2021 23:02

In all seriousness there was a mouse sized one in my living room the other day!
I saw it out of the corner of my eye and thought it WAS a mouse it was so huge. I actually would have preferred it if it had been a rodent.

We have insect screens on all the windows so god knows how the fucking thing got in. DH had to deal with it using a glass and a coaster. Then I made him wash the glass and coaster Grin
I hate how pathetically scared I am of them, but I just can’t deal with them.
I thought the cat might go after or eat them, but no such luck, he just ignored it!

isthisouting · 31/08/2021 23:03

I'd rather have flies, honestly the WEBS as well just so annoying - I am OCD about a clean house yet at least twice a week we walk through webs inside. Bloody hate the fuckers.

Is it possible to spider proof a house??

leavesthataregreen · 31/08/2021 23:03

@Eeiliethya

This fella currently resides in my bathroom!

Could strap a saddle on the fucker and ride it.

You are insanely brave. I just met one like that coming up the stairs and shouted for DH to set it free in the garden.
gottastopeatingchocolate · 31/08/2021 23:05

I had one twice the size of Eeiliethya's photo on my bedroom ceiling.

I usually do the cup and card release, but it was too high to reach. (And I don't think I had a cup big enough!)

So I lay in bed, reading. Every paragraph I would look up and check the spider was still there.

Until the book got a bit gripping... two pages later, the spider was gone.

Bit tricky sleeping that night!!

How the hell have you got your hand that close???

This thread is making me shiver, I've I ly found tiny ones so far, although there is a beast outside my front door but he hides in the day and only comes out out night to feast on all the bugs in his Web.

Seriously though had anyone got any tips to get over this phobia, I feel sick just thinking about them 😞

MrsSkylerWhite · 31/08/2021 23:07

Spiders are brilliant.

Scuttles away …….

ew1990 · 31/08/2021 23:08

Oh dear ignore all the mistakes in my last post,

Shaky hands 😂

cricketmum84 · 31/08/2021 23:08
@cricketmum84 I don't mind them, they eat flies and I hate flies with a burning passion!

I wanted to send a picture to my mum and an empty toilet roll tube for perspective just wasn't cutting the mustard Grin
True! I don't mind them as long as they don't come too close to me. Leggy McLegface lives under the big chair. He eats flies and other bugs, doesn't run near my feet and in return he gets to stay warm and dry. It's an unspoken agreement. It works for us 😂

Hellotoallmyfans · 31/08/2021 23:08

Awww, I don't mind spiders. I've even held a tarantula! They eat the nasty bugs - flies etc. They also eat aphids and other bugs that eat our crops - they are essential to the ecosystem and we'd starve without them, so there! I had a tiny spider crawling around my kitchen for days a while back - I just left it to its business and it became like a little friend that kept on popping up. Then I accidentally stepped on it one day and squashed it flat - I wanted to cry!

I'm team spider! 🕷

SourMilkGhyll · 31/08/2021 23:12

Just had the fright of my life.

Whilst reading this thread the advert across the top of the screen moved and out of the corner of my eye I thought is was a spider on my phone.
Arrrghhhhh!

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 31/08/2021 23:15

@Bellagonna 😂 So true... but actually I am another spider-lover-fly-hater.

Big, hairy ones in the UK are probably giant house spiders.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 31/08/2021 23:19

The massive house spiders don’t spin webs. They chase down their prey, which is why they are so fast.

Most of the webs in our house are from pholcidae, spindly cellar spiders. If you can bear to leave them be they will catch and eat the house spiders for you.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 31/08/2021 23:29

I have a Boris living near the air brick in my room at the moment. My room faces the garden, so I’m leaving him be as he’s intercepting flies for me. Solid trade as far as I’m concerned.

There was one in the futility room last week, but I think one of the cats found it. They enjoy spiders.

ALongHardWinter · 31/08/2021 23:49

It's that dreaded time of year again. Every year, late August through to beginning of October, the Big Bastards appear. I think it's the mating season.

ALongHardWinter · 31/08/2021 23:58

OnceUponAMiddnightBeery Well said! I KNOW we are 1000 times bigger than them, and I KNOW they are good for the environment. But if you've got a serious phobia about the things, well, that counts for nowt!

Evidencebased · 01/09/2021 00:01

Massive humans that have no business existing...
Come and kill my family for no reason whatsoever: not like we're any threat to them in any way,
Yet they freak out and slaughter us,

DismantledKing · 01/09/2021 00:03

Sarahlou63

Stick your twee poem up your judgmental arse

I would be drawn in normally, but tonight I’ll just shrug.

@ALongHardWinter exactly! I’ve tried so hard to cope with this phobia, and as I said before I am so much better than I used to be.

But it’s still there, and all the rational and logical arguments in the world won’t make any difference. As said before, I can now use a spider catcher, no harm to spiders, no panic attacks for me.

Eeiliethya · 01/09/2021 00:25

@leavesthataregreen

Not brave, my secret phobia is fish. Like goldfish. When I go on holiday, I have to inspect the sea before I pop my toes in to make sure nothing is going to touch me.

I don't mind looking at them in a tank but I'd rather poke my own eyeballs out with a rusty bread knife than stroke a fish Blush.

Spiders, all good but to touch a fish would reduce me to a screeching banshee.

@ew1990 London Zoo's phobia course did the trick for me. Not cheap, but a massive improvement in a few hours.

Blueleah · 01/09/2021 00:35

They’re always there, just you don’t usually see them. But in September they go looking for a mate so you see them crawling around. In a few weeks they’ll go back to hiding.
