Self cleaning electric ovens, does anyone have one? Does it force you to use the function?

I thought I was set on one but I've read it can melt things, be dangerous, give off fumes bad for asthmatics.seens like a lot of negatives just for a self cleaning oven.

However it's a function I assumed I didn't have to use unless desperate but a john Lewis oven I'm looking at, a review says it's beeping and reminding you to do it and it's annoying and when you do it you have to take the rails out etc!

I have one and it does force you to do it. Not noticed any smells or anything though.

Mine doesn't beep at me (it's an older model tho) It is a brilliant feature and as far as I've noticed no fumes were given off, but I would say that because the cleaning is done at such a high temperature there was a 'hot metal' smell. Things don't melt 'cos there shouldn't be any thing else in the cavity. It takes a couple of hours and all that's left is a little dust. It's very efficient. I was tempted to put the shelves in but did them with a chemical instead. Being allergic to any kind of ...housework I love it.

Thanks, I've read that fumes are given off, dangerous chemicals even stuff like carbon monoxide and the melting was something above and it.

So odd for the oven to force you to do it?

Ours is pyrolitic. It really stinks, we need a window open but is great to clean up a small pile of ash at the end.

BarbaraofSeville · 31/08/2021 18:37

Ours is an AEG. It doesn't beep or force you to do it. I've been ignoring ours for months, it just flashes a code when you turn the oven off.

You do have to take the shelves out but it's really quick and easy. I put them in the dishwasher while the pyro is doing it's thing.

It's not smelly but it does warn about fumes that are dangerous to pet birds and tells you not to have birds within a certain distance.

But it is really good and well worth having.

Do you all have carbon monoxide alarms?

yes! We have a CO alarm (but it's not in the kitchen) And anyway, if you're using the facility during the daytime with normal movement around the house there wouldn't be a build up. Ventilate well.

MauveMavis · 01/09/2021 13:31

I've got one (miele) doesn't force you to do it.

It's just burning things - all burning things release chemicals - wtf do you think wood burners, motorised vehicles and fossil fuel power stations are so bad for the environment!

Mrsjayy · 01/09/2021 13:35

We have a hotpoint It doesn't beep we have only self cleaned it once it does stink but you just open the backdoor windows r. It's no worse for you than a chimnea or bbq.

Mrsjayy · 01/09/2021 13:36

Or force you*

ineedaholidayandwine · 01/09/2021 13:36

My old Zanussi one would just flash a code each time you turned the oven off, no beeping or forcing. Great feature, made cleaning a breeze! Take out the shelves and set it going with a window open, it gets very hot!
I have asthma and never had any issues with fumes, CM alarm has never gone off either.
New house has Neff ovens with this feature and so far haven't been alerted to them needing cleaning.
