Why would my car do this?

It won't start first time.

It's a 2018 automatic Volvo XC90.

Every morning I have to go out, try and start it and leave it for 20 minutes and try to start it again. It usually starts then.

It's been to the garage, new battery etc and they can't find why it should not start first time and then start fine after a while of not trying.

It's nerve wracking when I have to be somewhere at a set time.

Anyone experienced this kind of temperamental car?

Cold/damp
Loose or corroded wiring?

PheasantsNest · 31/08/2021 09:54

My Dad spent £800 on the same sort of issue. He ended up with a new battery, alternator, starter motor. It turned out the problem was the onboard computer needed to be replaced. His wasn't a Volvo.

My friend had a Volvo XC90 and had problems with it from new. She had no power pulling out of junctions. I went with her once and was terrified we would get hit.

I had similar with a Honda Civic, it was an issue with the fuel recirculation system, it went through a spate of not starting when cold, then a period of not starting when hot.

It was, however, a bitch to diagnose. The garage had it up on ramps connected to diagnostic computers for a full week.

My neighbour had this

Same car same year

Whole car had like 500 electrical faults

Go to another Volvo garage

Glow plugs?

Take it for them to plug it in and see what it comes up with.

The first requirement for a car is that it is reliable.
If the garage cannot diagnose and fix the fault, then sorry but change the car.
In the long run you'll be glad you did.

Another fuel issue shout from me.

Yes. Try another garage. Sounds like they’ll need it a few days as it’s a cold start problem, so make sure you get a courtesy car

DerAlteMann · 31/08/2021 10:54

Don't bother. Change the car.

Longdistance · 31/08/2021 11:00

That’s just not good enough for a 3 year old car. Was it bought through a Volvo dealership? I’d kick up a stink.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 31/08/2021 11:08

I had a volvo (diesel) and just very occasionally if I went to start it somehow managed to turn it off again before it had actually started (I was so keen to get home from work) I had to leave it 10 minutes before it word start again.

Are you using a Volvo specialist expensive (i know) but they have proper Volvo diagnostics and all the error codes and can update the software if necessary.

There is also a Volvo Forum -
volvoforums.org.uk - who may be able to help. I think you may need to register but it is free.

ShouldersBackChestOutChinUp · 31/08/2021 11:30

The garage updated all the software. New battery. Did a check of everything.

Will have to go back. Thanks all.
