@SpindleWhorl I'm apportioning a share of the blame to Carrie for bending BJ's ear about animal rescue at a time of international crisis, you can add her to the list.
Of course. Here we are with the latest List of Fault, Guilt and Shame:

Pen Farthing
Twitter
The Taliban
The UK government
The UK military
The MoD
The US military
The US President
Carrie Johnson
Boris Johnson
Also a special mention for Dominic Raab, simply because I absolutely despise him.

Wouldn't there be an uproar if he'd left the animals to die needlessly and flown out alone? I'm sure if he'd been given a choice of take your staff (who he is still working to try and evacuate) or take the animals he would have chosen the staff. However that wasn't the choice, it was take the animals or go alone.

KeflavikAirport · 31/08/2021 11:37

He could have euthanised the animals.

SweetPetrichor · 31/08/2021 11:38

I’m glad they got out. I value the life of an animal equally to a human, and there aren’t security considerations to make when deciding whether to bring an animal into the UK where as any human coming into the country is a potential risk. Most refugees aren’t, but decisions have to be made. One flight, get some innocent creatures out, I’m all for that. A lot of innocent humans were also helped…but you can never help everyone. It’s sad, but that’s reality.

The point is it should never have hot that far. When he was told the staff could leave on a military plane days before they should have humanely euthanised the animals, gone to the airport & saved the people. Much was made of there being women & children among the group - even if some people stayed with the animals why didn’t they get sent on ahead?
Aspiringmatriarch · 31/08/2021 11:42

@nancy75

There were tweets days before he left saying he & the staff could get on a military plane but not the animals - he decided to dig his heels in & say all or nothing, which ended up with the people being left behind. Now we’ve seen him & the animals back home the hugely vocal fan club in Twitter have stopped being bothered - so much for caring about the staff too. In fact rather than carrying on with the campaign to get the staff out the supporters then moved their attention to a US animal rescue also trying to evacuate dogs & cats.
Bloody hell. I hadn't heard this. SadAngry

Would you say the same if your house was on fire & the firemen decided to save your dog instead of your kid, because your kid might grow up to be a criminal? An absolutely disgusting way of saying dogs & cats are worth more than foreigners
BFrazzled · 31/08/2021 11:45

@KeflavikAirport

He could have euthanised the animals.
Then returned the remaining donations, deleted his twitter account and gotten a 9 to 5 job?Shock /sarcasm
downinthedoldrums · 31/08/2021 11:45

He's going to be on Jeremy Vine at midday.

Good to hear his version rather than Ben Wallace's.

Though have serious doubts given JV's rather right of centre leanings.

Name12341 · 31/08/2021 11:46

That's a separate question to the animals though - why didn't some of the men go ahead with the women and children? Is there any reason given for that?

Ifailed · 31/08/2021 11:47

Luckily, you are in a minority. The simple fact is a lot of time was spent on Air Traffic Control, ground movements, preparing and checking papers, loading the plane etc, taken up to fly out a bunch of pets, rather than some of the Afghans who have been helping the UK military and Government for the past 20 years.

The message is quite simple, some people in the West value the life of a cat over that of a person who has been working to assist the West.

BoredZelda · 31/08/2021 11:47

There are bio security concerns bringing animals in.

MaverickDanger · 31/08/2021 11:50

His name’s Paul. But of course that isn’t as cool as his wanky military nickname.

SpindleWhorl · 31/08/2021 11:52

Jeremy Vine is a bit of a twat. They're welcome to each other.

nancy75 · 31/08/2021 11:53

Maybe JV can ask why he got his wife out of there early on if human life is worth the same as the animals

BigWoollyJumpers · 31/08/2021 11:54

Also, at the same time, there are thousands of dogs and cats already in the UK looking for homes. Look at the number of Romanian dog rescues for example. The time and effort and money taken to get all these strays from all corners of the world, back to the UK for homing, is, in my humble opinion, ridiculous. Personally, I put people before animals.

VladmirsPoutine · 31/08/2021 11:55

It really is remarkable the amount of people who supposedly value animal lives as equal to human lives. It stops to become quite so shocking when you look at who those humans are.

Confused His wife is Norwegian and was evacuated by the Norwegians on their planes. She was not eligible for UK rescue. But the Norwegians do need to account for the fact that she was almost the only person on her flight out of Afghanistan.
Tooembarrassingtomention · 31/08/2021 11:57

@Tippexy

Same old posters still going on about the “animals went in the hold” when that is not the point.

Conveniently, they ignore:

 1. the man hours used to process the animals at the airport when those man hours could have been used to process refugees.

 2. the fact that his plane took up one a of a limited number of remaining landing slots. His plane held 300 (although we are not told if it did). A military plane would have held 600.

The British military had stopped flying by the time he left. Not sure about the US.
Cherrypies · 31/08/2021 11:57

@LeafOfTruth

It really is true that no good deed goes unpunished.

Try very hard to get animals and people out but only succeed getting the animals = everyone has a pop at you

Get no one out at all = get the option to sit on a keyboard having a pop

Totally agree, the op has a correct username

Still looking forward to hearing PF's account, rather than the version fed to the media (e.g. spectator) by Ben Wallace and his team.

Quite, no doubt if it were a choice between their mum/child/husband & a dog they might have a rethink. As it’s just foreigners…
Wooollffff · 31/08/2021 11:58

@nancy75

His wife is Norwegian and I believe she left on a Norwegian organised flight together with a US employee who was pregnant and had a small child with her. They were assaulted at the airport on their first attempt.

Sunbird24 · 31/08/2021 11:59

Still can’t get my head around why some people are so convinced that the Taliban are going to be going round torturing Afghan dogs and cats, rather than just ignoring them and letting them fend for themselves as they did previously. There are animals in the same situation in many other countries, are we going to be required to fly plane loads of animals out from Egypt, Greece, Turkey etc as well now?
