@WanderingFruitWonderer

I actually can't believe another thread has been started on this. There are several others already. I saw the thread title and thought 'oh no, not again, give me strength!' It's very unfair to say that Operation Ark supporters only cared about the animals. Personally I've wept at scenes of desperate people at Kabul airport, and felt despair when I heard the Nowzad team and families were being prevented from leaving when planned. I'm trying to find out what I can do to help get as many more vulnerable people out of Afghanistan as possible. I haven't a clue how to go about it? It's totally possible to care very much about animal rights, and human rights at the same time. In fact they're directly linked, and most animal lovers (in my experience) are kind caring people generally. Jan Leeming has spoken very eloquently here

You'll find it if you scroll down a little way. I'm not on Twitter, so the link leads to Peter Egan's Twitter account. It really is worth a view...

Thanks for posting that link, and for the rest of your post.

I've just found out what the UK govt/DEFRA has done to Geronimo today (via Egan and Dyer's feed) . That poor animal. Dragged away and terrified, then killed. Sad

This appears to be footage from inside the airport, after the Taleban took control of it.
Completely trashed.

Whilst checking that account, I found this, which also appears in the Times: www.thetimes.co.uk/article/former-british-soldier-to-lead-overland-exodus-xbft29fpw?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1630402505

Jumped up pollock

You know the background and service records of the people working in FCO and MOD?

No but I'm pretty sure the MOD doesn't employ fish

WanderingFruitWonderer · 31/08/2021 18:44

@Doodlebug71 thank you. Yes, I've not long heard about Geronimo. So awful Sad

Booknooks · 31/08/2021 18:53

Yeah we should just let all of those animals that test positive (twice) for TB to roam about, or is it just because alpacas are more fluffy and cute than cows that people are arsed?

VeganVeg · 31/08/2021 18:54

Another informed poster. 🙄

WanderingFruitWonderer · 31/08/2021 18:55

@Doodlebug71 also, thank you for the other links. Ben Slater sounds amazing. I wonder if there's anything we can do from here to support his ongoing efforts to rescue Afghan civilians? Hearing about that has given me a little hope and light again, after so many dark days. I hadn't heard about him or his mission before, so thank you so much for that

Yes she claimed that the tests gave false results because of a pure protein form he had been exposed to, it seems odd that none of the scientists thought this was likely to be the case. Really are they just really keen to kill animals? Do they spend their lives studying science to just never bother applying it? Or perhaps it's regulations to adhere to if you keep certain animals in this country, yes yes she kept it segregated from the others, which is really nice for an animal that needs to be kept in herds.

@Bloodypunkrockers. I know Ben Wallace's background. Including the part where he was overseas director for QinetiQ, the arms dealer. Most of the information you mention is a matter of public record.

Glad he's been reunited with his wife, I really hope something can be done for his staff, he did what he could and for someone so dedicated it must be really, really challenging to know that it reached a point there was nothing more he could do.

I don't think that was the "pillock" he was abusing by voicemail

So you're "gotcha" doesn't really land

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 31/08/2021 19:26

Yup. Read it.
Haven’t changed my mind about him.

@Booknooks. Could explain how he found it so easy to push the crocodile tears quite recently. www.thecanary.co/opinion/2021/08/17/wondering-who-benefited-from-the-war-in-afghanistan-theyll-be-meeting-in-london-next-month/

Could be worth a twitter account to check some of this.

I don't feel superior at all, it was just a response to your sarcastic post to me.

no but they do employ people like my son's flatmate; state educated in a midlands town, degree from northern university, very bright and hardworking. Exactly the sort of person we should have in our government depts. The sort of people who shouldn't have to put up with being shouted at , threatened and bullied by someone who thinks themselves superior because they have rescued some dogs

You're right, your friend's son shouldn't have to put up with being shouted at etc, the vet I shouted at when they didn't treat my cat properly shouldn't have to put up with it, I shouldn't have been threatened when I worked in a call centre. However, unless your friend's son is Peter Quentin then Pen Farthing didn't have a go at him.

Oh and 'just because he rescued some dogs'? Really?

Peaseblossum22 · 31/08/2021 20:17

You can’t have one rule for one and not another . It’s never right to threaten someone full stop.

Pretty baffled that his fan club are excusing this

He was clearly under pressure but the civil servants were hardly sitting with their feet up thinking of ways to block this one man and his animals

He conveniently claimed that he didn't remember making that call. When I heard it today I was shocked at the savagery of it

No one should have to put up with it, I'm not sure why his education is relevant Confused. But sadly that's the reality, pens voicemail was not appropriate, but then I've had worse on a night shift from someone I've been busting my arse to help, usually when they're scared, stressed or whatever, as he was. Not excusing it, but demonising him for something plenty of people do in similar circumstances is a bit unfair.

WanderingFruitWonderer · 31/08/2021 20:32

@Doodlebug71 yes, I've always been a bit of a social media refusenik, and I'm a bit rubbish with technology generally Blush. But, in terms of connecting with like-minded souls, and sharing ideas and campaigns and so on, I can see it would have advantages. I'm considering it. In the interim, thank you for the link

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 31/08/2021 20:39

I had someone threaten to 'smash my fucking face in' for not reconnecting their cable TV when they hadn't paid the bill. This was face to face with a foot high piece of Perspex between us so forgive me if I lack sympathy for someone being left a shouty voicemail.

Piccalino3 · 31/08/2021 21:11

I've read some of these threads, admittedly, not this one all the way through and I can't believe people are still up in arms about this. I know nothing about Pen Farthing other than what has been reported lately, I just listened to the recording and I don't blame him one bit for being threatening, rude and aggressive. He was desperate. This is a life or death situation. I'm sure people have been more aggressive over an outage of wifi or other similar reasons. We are lucky, most of us, to never know that stress. Had he not been pushy and capitalised on social media he'd have got no where. I followed the story and glad he got out with the animals but I am so so sad and sorry for his staff. I hope he finds a way to get them out, it seems like he'll be working flat out to do so.

None of us know if the army personal who helped load the crates were taken away from other duties which would helped people. There must be strict ways people have been processed. The ones loading may have had no one to load at that time. None of us know how the processing works. Pen tried to do a good thing and sadly was only partly successful. This all went wrong and people have been abandoned to their terrible fate for many reasons but those reasons have to do with government, not Pen Farthing. We need to lay the blame where it belongs and hold those who failed in their duties to account.
