We are in a lovely holiday cottage and we keep breaking things. Is anyone else as clumsy as us?

Day 1: Dog swished his tail and knocked a glass of red wine up the immaculate pastel coloured matt walls.

Day 2: I smashed a wine glass that can only be sourced in the states (I googled) to try to find a replacement myself.

Day 3: The swing bin lid is broken. I'm not entirely sure this was us but there is an inventory at change over and no mention of this so I assume it's our fault.

Day 4: Dog creates a 'viewing window' in one of those tow along bike trailer things. He hasn't chewed it, just rested his head as we were cycling and ripped a hole in the (fairly insubstantial) lining.

I have ADHD and am exceptionally clumsy and used to paying the ADHD tax for all the things I cock up but this holiday has been something else. We've got 5 more days, what will we break next?

@Mollythewally

"Yes, to the weight also! At home we have cereal bowls made of wheat that can't smash and are also light as a feather. If only neurodiverse people ruled the world!"

ooo have you got a link please?

Sure :) these are the bowls we have at home www.amazon.co.uk/Lightweight-Degradable-Non-Toxic-Eco-Friendly-Perfect/dp/B081TF8T1X/ref=sr_1_8?dchild=1&keywords=wheat+bowl&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1630356564&sr=8-8

and if anybody is interested in the unbreakable glasses they are here: www.amazon.co.uk/Premium-Unbreakable-Pint-Glasses-Assorted/dp/B07BY3863T/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?dchild=1&psc=1&keywords=unbreakable+glass&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyRDVDVlNNVDNLOEFJJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNTE2NDA4MUtBOFU1Qkg0WUJJVCZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwODA1MDM1MjY5QzBIUjFDQjhTQiZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1630356621&sr=8-2-spons

They might be of interest to the poster who wanted to know if we "are like this" at home. Yes. This is how we have to live. Some people are not neurotypical.

I find holidays quite stressful with a small DC who seems programmed to destroy Confused. In our last holiday cottage, we drank out of plastic picnic cups rather than using the crystal glasses provided and gaffer-taped a picnic rug over one of the white-upholstered chairs for our DC to sit on. All the vases and ornaments were relocated to the top of the kitchen cupboards.

stripedbananas · 30/08/2021 21:53

In future hide / put away anything breakable and replace with your own plastic unbreakable items till you leave.

I melted the hairdryer in a holiday cottage this summer. DS had fallen into the sea and I was trying to dry his shoes. Melted the hairdryer AND his shoe.

godmum56 · 30/08/2021 22:02

@Mollythewally thank you! My current plastic bowls aren't microwaveable.

Wideawakeandconfused · 30/08/2021 22:03

We have this with certain family members. My sister in particular seems ‘blessed’ - she actually managed to completely pull the door off a commercial fridge in the supermarket (it was a sliding door). She’s also pulled the door off a wine cabinet, and just this weekend managed to melt a kettle. We have a variety of SEN in our family and we all laugh and embrace our many unique ‘powers’. Smile

brittleheadgirl · 30/08/2021 22:05

Dh has adhd and I must admit I do scan holiday accommodation upon arrival and try and work out what's at risk of being broken by him!

DespairingHomeowner · 30/08/2021 22:06

@Mollythewally: have you tried to wash the wine stain off the wall? I’d use lukewarm water with a drop of fairy liquid on a tea towel (try a v inconspicuous area 1st to make sure you don’t take paint off the wall).

In my experience I’ve always been able to get those sort of marks off. Rinse with clean water afterwards

That's great! We love them, nice size and they last really well.

I’m a owner …I’d retain deposit for the red wine repaint.

Can't those of you with dyspraxia and ADHD just BE MORE CAREFUL? BE BETTER AT REMEMBERING?

No?

No.

We can't.

A little understanding goes a long way but a few people have seized upon a light thread to shame us.

Why? What are you getting from it? Please don't. Just scroll and move on if you don't get it.

Well said.
RavingAnnie · 30/08/2021 22:24

@Lalliella

I’m not quite sure why you’re making light of treating someone else’s property with such disrespect. It’s not really good enough just to throw money at the problem. Be more careful.
You are ignorant and ableist. Stop trying to shame disabled people.

At a holiday home right now but the moment I walked in, I immediately changed DS's nappy first thing as he has peed for several hours. After new nappy on, about 20 mins later the holiday cottage owner walks into the house with a new kettle and I notice a massive pile of shit on cream carpets 😮. He has shat so much that even a newly changed nappy couldn't hold it in together. Never in my life has this ever happened before unless he has diarrhoea but the timing couldn't be worse and of course it had to happen at a time the owner bloody walks in or on cream carpets ffs!

Second night, he vomited tomato sauce pasta aiming at the carpets again. Tomorrow's going to be interesting when I checkout 💸 (£££ with wings flying out my palms)

@talkmethrough where are you on holiday? Can you get a rug doctor from a local Tesco so that you don’t get a fine?

No I’m not. You know nothing about me. 2 of those acts of damage were done by a dog. Am I species-ist? What I’m mainly objecting to is OP making light of someone else’s property being damaged. It’s really not that difficult to put a glass of wine in a place it won’t be knocked over by a dog. Disability doesn’t come into it.

Not making light. Asking for reciprocal stories having paid the 'tax' to make things right.

You have come here to shame and bully.

This reminded me of a time when I tried to open the toilet door after using the toilet in my mil's house and I unlocked the door and for some stupid reason, I decided to push the door open placing my palm on the window (so stupid) and the glass fell out the frame, all shattered on to the floor. I broke her tap too one time 😅

I don't know what it is but the more you try to be careful, the more accidents happen or some sort of glitch takes place in my brain where I don't use common sense or my mil's house is literally like a toy house so delicate it breaks when I'm around.

Mollythewally · 30/08/2021 22:39

Siri, show me two completely contradictory statemenets in the interest of shaming another:

"2 of those acts of damage were done by a dog. "

" It’s really not that difficult to put a glass of wine in a place it won’t be knocked over by a dog"

Ah. There we go.

@Boredhimtodeath Rugdoctor helped with the poo stain and I used antibac wipes as well but the owner saw it so tomorrow she will be like poo there. The pasta stain unfortunately left a faint orange and white streakz I've tried again today but there's also a discolouring maybe it's because it's still damp.

Mollythewally · 30/08/2021 22:42

I'm not going to lie, I've screenshot your "disability doesn't come into it" post and reported it to mumsnet and if they do nothing I will report it to police for the hate crime it is.
