60 second challenge - have I just been scammed?

Hi all.

I just had 2 people at my door, showed me their ID and kind of ambushed me with all this information about who they were (60 second challenge - I'd take a survey about my energy use and find me better deals) so I ended up giving them my name, DoB and phone number. I realise I'm a gullible idiot and I find it so hard to say no to people - something I'm working on with my therapist.

A text came through with a number I should ring to do the survey. That's when it clicked that this was probably a scam, so I told them I needed to do some more research and closed the door. I've done some looking online and they seem to be a nuisance but also some good reviews (which I realise could and probably are fake). I'm guessing they wanted me to ring because it would have charged me a small fortune. How screwed am I that they have my personal details though?

Report to 111. Do you have a ring doorbell or similar. I’d change your phone number to be honest if you can.

They have your address too don’t forget - do they have your mother’s maiden name?

MaryTalbot · 30/08/2021 19:26

Do they have your email etc as well and don’t forget they have your address and current energy company

imacuddler · 30/08/2021 19:29

Well they haven't got much information from you that they couldn't get elsewhere so I wouldn't worry too much. Obv don't do anything further.
Cold calling should be banned.
It must scare the older generation.

I don't have a ring doorbell and they didn't ask for my email or mother's maiden name. Them having my number isn't so terrible because I get my new phone on Thursday and I'll get a new number. Have they got enough details to start taking out loans etc in my name?

I think this is just a sales thing. So you won’t be scammed but you probably will get a lot of calls badgering you to change your energy supplier.

Get a ‘no cold calling’ sign for your door. I have one and it’s worked a treat!

I'm not sure the NHS are going to be very interested 😬

I recently had this same thing. After the text came through I rang the number on it and spoke to Scottish Power. They have gotten me a much better deal on my energy and gas and I received my welcome letter today. It is legit you'll be happy to know.
