Anyone else waiting for their teen to get back from a festival today ?

My 17yr old DS is at Reading and I am really looking forward to seeing his stinky self after what I am sure has been one of the best weekends ever.

We have been watching some of it on the tv and the atmosphere has looked brilliant.

I am so happy they got to go this year and make some amazing memories.

Picked DD and friends up this morning at half past 7.
They hadn't slept at all last night - they've been in bed most of today!

It is DD's second festival of the summer holidays. She was at Boardmasters a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully none of them brought covid home! One of her small group did from Boardmasters. One friend this time actually got his first vaccine at the festival yesterday.

Apparently she is going to sort out her washing 'in a bit' - we'll see when that actually gets sorted!

MrsDThomas · 30/08/2021 17:57

Mine is home. Ratty, hungry, tired.

@Hen2018

My son’s colleague went to one, passed Covid to all her workmates and work had to shut for 10 days and lost £30,000.

My son then brought Covid home with him and I spent 10 days hoping my younger son (ASD and kidney problems) didn’t catch it.

So selfish.

He could just as easily picked covid up in a bar or restaurant, or just catching the bus to work and back. These teens and young people (plus some older ones) aren't going anything wrong. It is all within the rules!

I caught Covid from work - I don't blame the pupil who most likely passed it on to me, even though it put me in hospital, had me out of work for 7 weeks and taking me several months to recover, as well as needing medication for life. It's the fault of a virus.

Anyone could catch covid pretty much anywhere there are other people!

It’s not selfish, it was allowed to proceed so they went. Lots of people there would be fully vaccinated too.

I’ll not lie as NHS staff it makes me nervous seeing those massive crowds of people cos obviously some will catch covid while they are there. But that’s the risk lots of people take when taking part in things atm.

However the other hand I was at festivals for years from the age of 17 so I know how amazing they are when you don’t ache the day after and can survive on no sleep!

DiscoDown21 · 30/08/2021 18:37

I’d also suggest not relying on LFTs. Maybe a PCR test in 3/4 days time would be more reliable to be honest. Unless symptomatic of course then get one booked in. Will be hard to tell which is the festival hoarse voice/cough from singing/shouting and Covid tho!

Imagine being so much of a misery that you begrudge young people having some fun after the shit 18 months we’ve all had.

Mine is back from Reading, horrified by the loos Grin

Timetobuckup · 30/08/2021 19:28

@FindingMeno A child of taste Grin I hope they also had a marvellous time

18 year old DD got back from Leeds at 4.30pm. Hoarse and stinky. She showered, ate and told me how much she loved every single minute and now she's gone out for the night to a club.

Good for her. Teens have had a shite 18 months. I'm glad she's happy. Smile

Pumpkintopf · 30/08/2021 20:44

@FindingMeno yep my ds was also appalled by the toilets 😂

He had a great time at Leeds but was slightly gutted Stormzy didn't bring on Dave like he did for Reading. Sounds like Liam did a better set at Reading too.

It was certainly an experience for him, he was straight in the bath when he got home.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 30/08/2021 22:24

DS informed me that the “best” time to go to the loo was in the arena toilets at midday. Lovely 😂. Sounds like a good time had by all and I couldn’t be happier.

MissSmiley · 30/08/2021 22:49

My DD16 sold her Leeds ticket at a big profit and stayed at home to work instead, the friend she was going with has had a positive LFT since she got home

ShouldIbeEmbarrassed · 30/08/2021 23:06

My DD did Leeds for the first time should have been last year, only did the day and said she was glad as camping didn't look her sort of thing, had a fantastic time though so I think this is the start of many.

DS did a local festival for the weekend couple of weekends ago first festival for him as well and is still a bit hoarse and sniffly but is testing negative on the LFT. Had the best time ever he said, not had so much chat from him in a long time as I did the first couple of hours of him being home telling us about it.

Just so pleased our teens can start to do the usual teen stuff they should be doing and was so lovely to hear them talk so animated about it.

Bloodylovecheese · 30/08/2021 23:08

My DD 21 came back a day early from Leeds ... she said she was cold at night and couldn't keep up with the 16 year olds GrinGrinGrin My DH and I chortled to ourselves to her disgust .

RhubarbCustardy · 30/08/2021 23:15

Advice for those going next year-dont bother taking food and drink. It wasn't allowed to be taken in this year and exorbitant charges for it inside. Piss takers.

mineofuselessinformation · 30/08/2021 23:28

DC2 went to a festival this year (quite a small and niche one), and left early as rain was forecast. (They're very sensible!)
DC2 went to one a few years back, managed to fall asleep on the train, missed the stop and had to travel back, and emerged with completely mud-covered wellies, a green eyebrow, laddered tights and completely matted hair. They were greeted with a cry of 'what the bloody hell do you look like? (said with love Grin).
It's a rite of passage, and good on anyone who did it - it's been a shitty year and a half for young folk. Yes, I know I'm showing my age here..... Smile
Everyone needs a bit of normality.

mineofuselessinformation · 30/08/2021 23:32

Oh bugger the clumsy typing....
It was DC1 who went to a festival a few years back..

howtodealwithit · 30/08/2021 23:40

Picked DS (17) up from the station after Reading. Strangely didn't smell at all, but looked like he'd been sleeping rough for a few days Grin

He had an absolutely amazing day, but isn't feeling 100%, will be keeping an eye on him and if not right, or other symptoms appear, then will book a PCR test to be on the safe side. I'm hoping he's ok, as his entire tent friends group are all feeling ropey and all bar DS had Covid 6 weeks ago so it's very unlikely they have it again (surely?!) and DS had it earlier this year so had hoped antibodies would help him. We will see...!

Just so pleased to see him happy, it's been a crappy 18 months with his age group missing out on a lot.

catinboots21 · 30/08/2021 23:45

Not my teen but some of my lovely teens who I work with were coming back today. One popped in to work and was full of beans about what a great time she had a Reading.

The rest will be in over the next day or two and will probs be feeling rubbish.

I will try not to get too frustrated with them being rubbish - and remember my festival aftermaths GrinGrin

pinkchampagne1 · 31/08/2021 00:01

My DS came back from Reading today. He decided he wasn’t a fan of camping after the first night and had to buy himself some earplugs as he couldn’t sleep for all the noise!
He is also feeling unwell with a sore throat and cough (as is his friend that he went with) so did a Covid test when he returned. It was negative. He has had Covid and is double jabbed so hoping it is just a regular cold. Seems quite a few are feeling under the weather.

PattyPan · 31/08/2021 00:01

I am unfortunately a Reading resident so I have been waiting for everyone else’s teens to go home so I can get some sleep and not have to listen to the sodding thumping bass anymore! No idea why they think it’s a good idea to hold a festival in such a densely populated area. From all the cheering and whooping I will assume everyone enjoyed it!

Kite22 · 31/08/2021 00:25

My dd is home from Reading. Said it was fantastic. Apparently though Liam Gallagher's set was ace !

I'm trying to anticipate the expense, aside from the ticket that is,

My dd said she spent a tenner. We already have tent and sleeping bag etc.
They had been to the supermarket before she went and taken stuff with them - pot noodles, apples, boxes of cereal, satsumas, those individually wrapped pain au chocolates etc etc. and their alcohol.
Food and drink all allowed in the camping area.

The only down sides she had were lack of any sanitary bins anywhere in or near the toilets, and then the length of time it took to get from the car park to actually leaving the site, today.

OverByYer · 31/08/2021 06:27

How did they make up a pot noodle? No electricity and no fires allowed?

RedRiverShore · 31/08/2021 06:41

Sounds like they all had a lovely time, my DS is a bit old for Leeds and Reading now but when he was younger (18-22) he used to work at most of the festivals as you usually get free entry, so worth doing especially at Glastonbury and if it is not so affordable.

That's not selfish, just unlucky

Mi e came back from Cornwall last Wednesday. Had a blast, lost her voice from talking and singing. No Covid and afaik no Covid among peer group
