Yes I’ve been watching The Vigil. Does anyone know this important bit of naval info?! Grin

Can't imagine they eat that much when at sea. That probably helps. I watched virgil too and the thought of being on that submarine made me feel a bit sick!

NiceGerbil · 29/08/2021 22:21

I read that as submarines! Thought of yellow Submarine. Was temporarily flummoxed Grin not seen that prog but if long time same as space station etc they exercise I imagine.

NiceGerbil · 29/08/2021 22:22

Is this a war thing? Lots of things to do in a big submarine to keep it going.

CrumpetsForAll · 29/08/2021 22:22

I wouldn’t have got out of the helicopter tbh. NOPE. Especially if you’re telling me there might be a murderer kicking around and I’ve got to fit all my stuff into a large envelope...

I found this about it…

“ With a doctor on each Vanguard-class submarine and 24/7 gym facilities – including a rowing machine, treadmill and weights – the submariners can also ensure they stay healthy.”

I thought the tree wallpaper n the canteen was a nice touch 😂

mpsw · 29/08/2021 22:25

There used to be a couple of submariners' DW on MN - I hope they see this.

According to DH (different bit of the military)

a) catering is plentiful, but its planned (can't exactly pop out for new supplies)
b) they have things like treadmills (probably) and stationary bikes (definitely), and probably other gym type equipment

CrumpetsForAll · 29/08/2021 22:25

@NiceGerbil oh yeah- it’s not like Major Tim Peake came back with double chins either...

It’s a crime drama. A submariner dies and for reasons I’m not super clear on the normal police investigate. It’s Suranne Jones and so far she seems to have found space for her hairdryer and straighteners in her bag...

Thank you @Ohdeariedear and @mpsw ! I know ‘a gym’ seems like a ridiculously obvious answer but they’ve really been hamming up the extreme lack of space so I’m still a bit intrigued as to how they fit one in if anyone knows!

He also said that there are times when they have 'silent routine' - no unnecessary noise - where even gym equipment can't be used. He thinks they don't have specific PTIs, but in a typical crew there will be people with adequate knowledge or as submariners in particular, and the navy in general, tend to multi-role there will pribabkymbe one or more person who has done an assistant PTI course and can advice on silent exercise (free weights, strength and conditioning workouts, etc)

HollowTalk · 29/08/2021 22:31

I've been on one, though not to work! The bunks were in the corridors and the bottom one was on the floor then each one was 18 inches above, I think. There were four of them, one above the other. It was the most claustrophobic place I've ever been. I think we were told that you don't have your own bed, you just take what's available when it's time for you to sleep.

Yes, yellow submarine 😊

Love that film

NiceGerbil · 29/08/2021 22:33

Lordy at hair straighteners Grin

So there's a murder and they're still all cruising around under water and she has great hair!

Sounds all v realistic!

In general for naval types they'd be doing all sorts of exercises to do with launching missiles and whatnot I'd think and they are pretty big so lots of walking about.

The prog sounds very silly! But that doesn't mean not enjoyable Grin

Brave woman police with great hair trapped at bottom of sea in vessel with murderer on Grin

Twizbe · 29/08/2021 22:34

My grandfather in law was a submarine captain. He was so tall I've no idea how he fit down there. Obviously as captain he got a slightly bigger berth but I don't think by much.

I never asked how they stayed fit on board, but they must have had some kind of gym equipment. They also have shore leave and time on naval bases.

NiceGerbil · 29/08/2021 22:34

The most famous submarine film is das boot.

Not my cup of tea but my dad has the dvd if you want to borrow it Grin

CrumpetsForAll · 29/08/2021 22:35

@mpsw we’ve got 3 under 5 and cousins staying with us atm- silent routine is making sub life seem much more attractive...

@HollowTalk why were you there and did it go under?! Agree the bunks looked like caskets- I just don’t think I could hack it even to walk about on!

Oh ha ha just saw on iplayer.

I'll have a look!

NiceGerbil · 29/08/2021 22:36

Not just any old submarine but a trident one!

Suspend disbelief time!

WorraLiberty · 29/08/2021 22:36

I expect it's pretty easy to stay slim when Deliveroo don't have deep sea divers Grin

CrumpetsForAll · 29/08/2021 22:37

@NiceGerbil and she’s got a secret past trauma Grin I am hooked but probably wouldn’t advise anyone used it as research for a career as a police officer/submariner/underwater serial killer

It reminds me of The Widow when Kate Beckinsdale was sauntering around the jungle with the most perfect ponytail I’ve ever seen.

CrumpetsForAll · 29/08/2021 22:40

@WorraLiberty tbh the food shown didn’t look great so I did wonder if that’s part of it (apols to any chefs in the forces if you’ve been misrepresented and Thankyou for your service!)

Yup - hot bunking is a thing. The captain, the medical officer and probably the Number 1 (2IC, XO) would always have their own, on newer/larger ones, there are more designated single occupant bunks. But the older and the smaller, the more likely the hotbunking.

A visiting person, such as our detective, would have their own bunk

CrumpetsForAll · 29/08/2021 22:44

@mpsw is the silent routine thing to help their body clocks adjust? The lack of natural light must be awful

I know someone who worked on a Trident submarine, he used to come back thin, hairy (not allowed haircuts) and very pale from lack of sunlight with a list of places he wanted to eat!
