Yes I’ve been watching The Vigil. Does anyone know this important bit of naval info?! Grin

It’s a more than a wee bit smaller than the Vigil set, isn’t it?

iamreally · 01/09/2021 22:20

Definitely much more cramped!
Feel a bit claustrophobic watching it!

Ekofisk · 01/09/2021 22:37

Lots of beardy men though.

BrozTito · 01/09/2021 23:01

U boaters were famous for their mad beards but no idea of the rules now. All branches seem to have loosened their beard and tattoo rules back to 1860s standards in the last few years.

BrozTito · 01/09/2021 23:03

Theres film footage of submarines pre WW1 when they had sails, I find it fascinating.

Poshjock · 02/09/2021 22:58

@BrozTito

And the crew went about naked like miners
Yeah so naked bridge is a thing. Someone calls it it and everyone has to strip. Dunno if it happens now women serve more commonly but some of my colleagues remember it fondly. Remember it’s very dark in there.

And I can confirm beards are very hairy and ‘relaxed’ after a period under. When they got alongside where i was they were given 3 days to all be groomed - as there were on watches so each had til their day off to get a haircut and a decent shave/beard trim.

I got an email from the royal navy earlier about a big online public event they're doing for people interested in being submariners if anybody is that interested. Ive been wanting to go back to one of the services so i may have a look.

Do they surface very often and for very long other than outside of deployment?

Are they much more energy efficient to run underwater rather than at the surface? Like anything to do with energy efficiency there are probably a lot of factors to consider.

What consideration was given to infrequent/unlikely weather conditions when they were designed? E.g. planes can handle lightning to an extent. A submarine would only get struck by lightning if it were at the surface and unlucky, but does someone check weather conditions before surfacing? I wonder how quickly they'd go back down if a storm did brew! This thread is the one that made me wonder: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4339609-do-you-know-to-get-out-of-the-water-if-there-s-lighting-around

That's brilliant Tyne! I especially like the idea of a soft play area. What sub is complete without a ball pit?

My lovely dad was a submariner for 20years and he stunk to high heaven when he came home after a tour.

Can also remember having children's Xmas parties on the boat and going out round the harbour ( wouldn't be allowed now due to health and safety rules)

Can remember coming home from school in late Feb early march in 82 and mum saying that dad had been called into work, she got a quick call to say the boat was as going on a mission couldn't say where - but told her to look out down South America ( falklands war )

Also can remember that if you had a miscarriage or stillborn or any bad news - then they wouldn't tell your husband till the boat had surfaced as couldn't take the risk in case they went mad with anger issues .

My dad loved every minute of his time as a submariner

Any bets on whodunnit after tonight's episode?

NiceGerbil When dh retired from the RN, he became a defence planner at NATO. Yes, we still need to defend ourselves against Russia, and defend our allies. Putin has got away with annexing the Crimea. What if he decides the Baltic States are next? Just because the USSR has dissolved doesn't mean the world is safer. I am more perturbed now than I ever was in the 70s, 80s and 90s.

@Ilovetoddlerssaidnooneever Johnson/aka the Cap’n is looking shifty to me. The helpful scouse was looking fishy but I think that’s a red herring, he’s cheating on his TUI model wife but not a killer imho

Not sure if it has already been mentioned, but there is a new series starting on Channel 5 on Monday at 2100 titled 'Submarine: Life Under the Sea' which might be of interest.

Fordian · 08/09/2021 21:57

I crewed on a yacht out of Sydney in '88/89 with a US naval submarine first officer as the captain and owner of the yacht

Fascinating; the 'submarine showers'; the suddenly coming across uncharted sea-mounts'; the 'not knowing the mission til you were doing it'; the discovery you were being shadowed by alien subs; the wife's disgust at the state you came home in (fatter and smellier). And how good the food was, hence getting fat...

The pay was very good, at officer level US Naval submarines then.
