Economy 7 meter to smart meter

We moved a few months ago and I'm now trying to sort a better rate for bills. We have a day and night rate displayed on our digital (but not smart afaik) Economy 7 meter.

As we use the majority of electricity in the daytime (no storage heaters etc) it seems a better idea to switch to a standard rate for electricity.

Does anyone know if we ask our provider to install a smart meter, will that be a standard rate meter? Once installed that would give us more options as to cheaper providers.

I've registered my interest in a smart meter in the hope a human I can ask might get in contact, but it won't be for a while as there's no slots available.

Yes you can ask
You need to make sure no appliances are wired into the night rate. But it’ll be easy to change and much cheaper if you aren’t using things overnight Smile

You need to make sure no appliances are wired into the night rate. is that a thing in the energy business for years and never ever heard of that. It was just the units you used between certain times was charged at different rates. No appliances were wired any differently?! Confused

You can ask your energy company to bill you as a standard rate customer even with your Economy 7 meter in place.

Thank you all, that's really handy to know. I'll get in contact with the supplier by phone next week and get it sorted.

The night rate seems really cheap at 9.39p per kwh, but the day rate is pricey at 23.25p.
Hopefully a normal rate will be somewhere in between and save us some money!
