I am a qualified TESOL and TEFL teacher but would like to know who to contact and how to help the new arrivals from Afghanistan.

Your local council or library might have an adult education team/department. Where i live, it's the same team that does food hygiene, computer literacy etc.
Some areas have paid staff teaching esol and some have volunteers.

There might also be church groups or community groups running English conversation classes.

One thing to bear in mind (might be different with the demographics but based on my work in 2017 onward with Syrian and iraqi folk) is that not everyone might be literate in their own language so it can be hard to make notes - some people made voice notes on their phones to remember which seemed like a good system while also learning literacy skills. Apologies if that's obvious.

I used to teach Afghan girls online through Skype years ago. So even if you can’t find anything near you it might be an idea to look for some online volunteer placements
