Please tell me what this book is

The central character is a teenage boy who lives with his parents. At one point he goes downstairs, sees his parents are watching a film where a man is following someone along a foggy street, and you see the man's feet and the railings he is walking past. The boy then sneaks out of his house.

What is the book? Reason being I think I've just seen the film and it made me think of that scene in the book. I don't know why.

Nobody?

I guess I haven't given you all a lot to go on hahaha! But yes I'm shamelessly bumping just in case somebody else has come along now.

I would love to help you but I don’t have a clue. Can you give more details on the era of the film, its style, etc?

1happyhippie · 28/08/2021 21:20

What was the film called? If you know the name of the film, should be able to find info on the book it’s based on?

Thanks both! So the film was on GREAT! MOVIES CLASSIC earlier. It's called Footsteps In The Fog, one of those old ones where everyone still acts like they're on stage, with Jean Simmonds and Stewart Granger, and they all poison each other and all that. I've had a Google around it but can't see that it's been referenced in a book. We read the book at school in the 1980s. I think it was one of those ones where teachers thought it would be relevant because it had teenage characters and was a bit gritty.

The book isn't based on the film though. The book was set in the 80s, it just had a bit where the boy went downstairs and saw his parents watching the film, before he sneaked out of the house.

So you answered your own question?

Thetepidstepper · 28/08/2021 21:47

No! I don't know the title of the book. That's what I'm after.

I get you OP, the film was referenced in the book. No idea though!

TheCovidHalfStone · 28/08/2021 21:55

What does he do after he sneaks out?

Thetepidstepper · 28/08/2021 21:59

I can't remember! Blush Something he shouldn't be doing I'm sure, hence the sneaking out.

Is it ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time’?

Thetepidstepper · 28/08/2021 22:20

Thanks but no. We read it at school in the 80s.

Sorry I can't help, but I'm intrigued now!!

Thetepidstepper · 28/08/2021 22:26

Thanks. I don't even know why I thought of it! I was just watching the film and I thought "oh it's that film that was in the book". That I read 35 years ago and didn't even like very much. I remember thinking "that film sounds fun" and wishing I could watch it.

Was it "The Runaways"? Do you remember the cover of the book?

Doyoumind · 28/08/2021 22:29

Kes? I don't recall that happening but I'm thinking of a book you might have read at school in the 80s about a teenage boy.

Standrewsschool · 28/08/2021 22:32

According to Wikipedia, it was based on ‘The Interuption’ by WW Jacobs.
