Friday night meal - Shepherd's Pie

We're having this for dinner tonight and we all agree this is not a Friday night meal.

However DS has eaten far too many KFC's this week so there you go. Normal service will be resumed tomorrow when we order in a curry 👍

However do most people actually have week day meals on a Friday/Saturday night?

We have a special meal because we're Jewish, and Friday Night Dinner is our thing! Tonight it's matzo ball soup, lentil curry, and ginger cake.

lokomojo · 27/08/2021 19:31

But on Friday night you're within your rights to have your chippy tea....

NoLongerATeacher · 27/08/2021 19:31

We’re having homemade cottage pie with lots of wine 😂😂

adeleh · 27/08/2021 19:32

I usually have egg and chips, but it’s boiled eggs tonight, as I am trying to lose weight.

AlbertBridge · 27/08/2021 19:35

I love that you say it isn't a Friday Night Meal. It totally isn't, is it? We just had a chicken stew and that's not a Friday night meal either, but I was craving it.

Friday night meals for me would be fajitas or anything Mexican; fish and chips obv; spag bol with wine, salad and garlic bread; any stew with booze in it (like coq au vin or boeuf bourgignon; or carbonara.

Zzzzfthg · 27/08/2021 19:36

No special dinners on a Friday here. Tonight we had spaghetti bolognaise.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/08/2021 19:38

I think Friday night meals are more about not having to cook.

I'd be quite fucked off if I ended up making a shepherd's pie on Friday night.

But if it was ready in the fridge, I wouldn't mind having some. But I'm having a bottle of posh pink fizz from Waitrose and some crisps and fudge.

MrsJBaptiste · 27/08/2021 19:42

@EishetChayil I did wonder if the title of this thread woukd suggest I was talking about Jewish Friday night dinners!

@AlbertBridge Aaarrgghh! Stew 😨 That was the one thing we all dreaded when we were younger. We'd come home from school and see the stew/casserole pot out and out hearts would sink. I'm still like that TBH! My poor mum, now I get how shit it is to meal plan and everything moan about a meal 😮

@BarbaraofSeville I've actually only made it this Friday as I've been off work today and so had time to prepare it and DH has cooked every night this week so it was probably my turn (and the aforementioned KFC's meant a healthy meal was required!)

We had shepherds pie tonight (batch cooked and frozen a couple of weeks ago so only needed warming up) easy meal for post shopping!

Quincejam · 27/08/2021 20:11

Sometimes fish and chips from the shop, other weeks, something home made and fishy... Saturday is takeaway night 😊

SillyBub · 27/08/2021 20:16

Friday is pizza night! It stems from when the DC were little and went to swimming lessons so it was quick to shove in the oven when they got back starving. They are no longer young, they no longer do swimming lessons but the pizzas are in the oven as we speak. The world actually falls off its axis if pizza is not served on Friday nights. True fact.

Oldraver · 27/08/2021 20:18

DS had cottage pie but only after he reminded me i hadn't fed him

We are out at lunch with friends so usually he'd have a ready meal but he had two last week. The pie was frozen and was made from leftover stew from last week

CampaignToo · 27/08/2021 20:20

Friday is leisurely cooking with a glass of wine here. Dinner's a bit later than during the week because no one's rushing off to activities, so I do something that takes a bit longer than a quick midweek meal. Shepherd's pie would be perfect.

We had a spinach Dahl with stir fried curried beef.

MissConductUS · 27/08/2021 20:26

Home-made pizza is our standard for Friday night dinner. DH is the pizza chef. It's a really easy dinner. It's also better than takeaway and about half the cost.

PaolaDiLorenzo · 27/08/2021 20:30

It has to be spaghetti bolognaise here on a Friday, there would be a riot if i dared to change it up. Saturday is a bung something in the oven night.

LynetteScavo · 27/08/2021 21:12

I used to cook a fish pie on a Friday night from scratch after a week at work. Stuff that, Friday night is now takeaway/M&S curry night. Saturday night is pizza (Sainsbury's is my favourite) and salad. Cooking is resumed on Sunday.

Shepherd's Pie is a Tuesday Wednesday or Thursday meal. If my kids have had too much junk it's homemade vegetable soup.

dudsville · 27/08/2021 21:21

We don't have any certain food on a specific day of the week so your dish wouldn't seem out of place here. Our only tradition is that often the night before or the day of the shop delivery we make "vegetarian surprise" using up the last of that week's fresh veg, but it could be any dish, and every few weeks will get a take away.

MichelleScarn · 27/08/2021 21:22

Lovely bit of squirrel and crimble crumble?

NapoleonOzmolysis · 27/08/2021 21:23

Fish on Fridays - that's the rule. We had salmon.

MrsPnut · 27/08/2021 21:30

Tonight’s dinner was chicken burgers made with ready made breaded chicken steaks in brioche buns with chips and salad.
Often Friday night is ready meals or a takeaway though. Pizza occasionally but that tends to be a Saturday night.
Cottage pie is for a mon-thurs dinner, and might well be on the meal plan for next week.

MrsJBaptiste · 27/08/2021 22:11

Great to hear everyone's Friday food!

Will definitely put fish & chips on the menu for next Friday🐟 & 🍟
