Court dates and new job

So I start a new job next month. Less than 7 weeks later I have a hearing for my divorce via Teams, there will be other dates in the future I am sure.

So, bearing in mind new job and the fact I didn’t realise all this would happen when I took the job (education) do I
A) just tell them and take the time unpaid
B) Go sick for the first one and worry about the other dates after

I really don’t want to piss anyone off, but these court dates are not going to be negotiable, but on the same token I don’t want to be that member of staff?? I would assume that the court dates will be a few months apart, although I think I will also be dragged to court over the child arraignments as well!

Be honest. It's court. Be up front

I'd tell them that you have a prearranged appointment for the first date and then clue in HR and your line manager shortly and to the point that you're currently going through w divorce and expect a few additional court dates so what is the policy for this. I reckon they'll be very understanding

I’m just worried I will lose the job.
I didn’t realise when I accepted that court was a) on the cards and b) would happen so quickly (I’d expected a wait of several months)
They have already reduced the hours to accommodate childcare issues for me and now I have this in the mix.

That said, I can’t not do it, you can’t just not turn up to your financial court hearings can you!!

Be honest.

Calling in sick in your first few weeks will be far worse than going to a genuine appointment. Be open from the start.

They definitely won't withdraw the offer

Its just a day, right?

RainbowToes · 29/08/2021 08:07

I'd tell them, give them as much notice as possible for all the court dates. I'd definitely attend every court hearing.

They will be sympathetic . It’s Court and your appearance there has to be accommodated. Just tell your boss the truth

Be honest and offer to make the time up
