I would think the Friday in the next whole week. And double check if the conversation is taking place on a Saturday or Sunday.

bizzey · 26/08/2021 16:31

Having mild "chats". About different interpretations about words with ds to explain how things can go wrong .
( DS has asd)

To me, the next Friday would be the first one upcoming. However, friday 27th would be ‘tomorrow’, not ‘next Friday’.

However, next Saturday would be Saturday 28th, not 4th September, as it’s the first Saturday chronilogically.

I have this argument regularly with my DP. You and I are right. He and the bank bloke are wrong.

WeAreTheHeroes · 26/08/2021 16:34

Obviously tomorrow is "this Friday". "Next Friday" is 3rd September.

TheCanyon · 26/08/2021 16:34

Next Friday is the 3rd. I'd expect them to say this Friday.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 26/08/2021 16:36

Friday of this week is "this Friday."
Friday of next week is "next Friday."
He should have just said tomorrow though to avoid confusion.

imnottoofussed · 26/08/2021 16:37

Yes next Friday is not the upcoming one but the one after that, same as next Saturday. Although usually if it was said earlier in the week I would double check with them to make sure as people are idiots and say the wrong thing all the time Grin

0blio · 26/08/2021 16:37

@WeAreTheHeroes

Obviously tomorrow is "this Friday". "Next Friday" is 3rd September.
This ^^
soapboxqueen · 26/08/2021 16:45

This Friday is the 27th
Next Friday is the 3rd

The upcoming day is always a 'this'
The one after that is a 'next'

If today is actually Friday(27th) then it would be 'today' and next Friday (3rd) would still 'next' (potentially 'this coming Friday'). Then on Saturday, Friday 3rd turns into 'this'

FrDamo · 26/08/2021 16:45

This Friday = tomorrow

Next Friday = Friday next week, September 3rd

SnarkyBag · 26/08/2021 16:47

@CherieBabySpliffUp

Friday of this week is "this Friday." Friday of next week is "next Friday." He should have just said tomorrow though to avoid confusion.
This

DH and I always have mix ups on this sort of think as thinks next refers to the upcoming one of the week whereas I think it all falls into the next following week

MintyGreenDream · 26/08/2021 16:48

3rd September is right

Clarkey86 · 26/08/2021 16:50

I also fall out with DH over this! It drives me mad.
If “Next Friday” meant the same as “This Friday”, why would we ever need to say “This Friday”?

Yesterday

Last Friday would have to fall into the previous week for me.

I have this problem all the time. I'm in Italy and "next" anything is the nearest one. And "last" is also the nearest. You don't cross a week threshold to get there! On the 2nd February, when talking about something that happened a whole 48 hours earlier, the newsreader will go "the terrible thing that happened last January 31st" Confused
And everyone says they're older than they are. As soon as you're in the year, you say you're that age. I'm 56 in October, so right now I'm 55. Oh no. Everyone says I'm 56.
Nutters.

SnarkyBag · 26/08/2021 17:07

I also have difficulty with the in two or three days time thing. Does today count as one of those days and does the day you’re counting down to get included?
