If you use a handheld Dyson, you might want to look at this....

!! I knew that a lot of dirt accumulates in these filters (and it's often what causes the stop and start business), but today I tried my usual cleaning method and it wasn't shifting anything, so I took the filter apart.
Suffice to say it's disgusting. Shock

I didn't know you could take it apart!

I didn’t realise you could take it apart like that, I washed mine earlier I’ve just went back and took it apart, it was disgusting.

mineofuselessinformation · 26/08/2021 19:23

@dane8, this was after trying to wash it - it was the fact that very little was coming out that made me wonder. (It's not from the filter material, but what accumulated inside.)
To others, I had no idea you could take them apart either (it's a bit fiddly)! I've since taken apart another two that weren't as bad as this one, but still grotty.
At least I know know, which was why I shared what I found.

@Chrysanthemum5, @Realhousewivesoftatooine, it was a revelation to me too! Grin

Oh I had no idea! Just going to investigate mine now

Jamandlemoncurd · 26/08/2021 19:41

How does it come apart? I've taken it out but can't see what to do now?

knittingaddict · 26/08/2021 19:46

I imagine you just pull it apart. They are disposable items and cheap to buy replacements.

mineofuselessinformation · 26/08/2021 20:18

@knittingaddict, but why would you when you can re-use what you have? I'm not the world's greatest environmentalist, but that makes sense to me. It's a bit of water versus yet more plastic. (Not to mention the fact that even copy filters are quite expensive.)

OP posts:
mineofuselessinformation · 26/08/2021 20:25

@Jamandlemoncurd, look for the three slots under the top.
You need to get a table knife or screwdriver in there so you can push the tab in. (I have said it's a bit fiddly!)
You need to push on a tab in the slot whilst pulling the bottom. Once you've got one released (don't let go of it!), you can then move on to another and it will finally come apart.
There will be a whole goldmine of delights in there.....

Bobojangles · 26/08/2021 20:28

Is it preforming better after cleaning it?

mineofuselessinformation · 26/08/2021 20:32

@Bobojangles, yes - massive improvement in suction and no more stop start nonsense!
I highly suspect this is why some people get rid of their stick Dysons (besides the battery issue), so that's why I posted.

We inherited an expensive fridge from the last owners of the house. It stopped working and the company explained that we needed to vacuum the filters every so often.
There was a dead mammal In there ……

mineofuselessinformation · 26/08/2021 20:54

@underneaththeash, my last washing machine was second hand. It smelt like a swamp and made a nasty noise when I got it! (A Bosch that cost me £25.)
It turned out that it needed a good clean, and that there was a twenty pence coin trapped in the pump.
After that, it worked well for several years.Smile

Where is that bit? I'm not sure how to find it! I do the clear cylinder and the bit inside that.

Ulysses · 26/08/2021 20:58

I’ve got a second set of filters so I’ve got a clean and dried out set to hand when they start to go. They’re non Dyson ones from Amazon and work great. I also ended up getting a replacement battery which was even better than the original. Again it wasn’t a Dyson brand and far cheaper.

3luckystars · 26/08/2021 20:58

If you pull that apart it might not go back together

I’ve just watched a video on you tube about cleaning the filter and it just tells you to wash it, it doesn’t mention taking it apart at all!

Does it go back together ok??

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/08/2021 21:02

That's the bit you pull apart and clean 🤣 I do mine every month or two

GreenTortoise · 26/08/2021 21:04

I don't have a Dyson but I do love taking apart my shark and giving it a good scrub!

Shmithecat2 · 26/08/2021 21:05

Which model is it? I've got a V11 but I don't think my filter looks like that?

@3luckystars - everything goes back together easily.

The above link also shows how to remove the tight knot of hair that prevents the roller from rotating and interferes with the suction. Once I’d done this, I realised/remembered why Dysons are fab. Agree, learning to maintain a Dyson is a game changer. Not knowing is probably the reason people get rid.

Can I ask where you got it from please? I’m in the market for a replacement too.
