If you use a handheld Dyson, you might want to look at this....

!! I knew that a lot of dirt accumulates in these filters (and it's often what causes the stop and start business), but today I tried my usual cleaning method and it wasn't shifting anything, so I took the filter apart.
Suffice to say it's disgusting. Shock
@knittingaddict, but why would you when you can re-use what you have? I'm not the world's greatest environmentalist, but that makes sense to me. It's a bit of water versus yet more plastic. (Not to mention the fact that even copy filters are quite expensive.)
To be clear I always wash and dry my filters, but there comes a point where they are just worn out and don't work properly. That's why they sell replacements cheaply on spares sites and amazon.

@DarnTooting

Just tried with my DC39 but couldn't get the filter to come apart. Shining a torch inside looks clean - am I missing something?
That isn’t a hand held, is it?

I put my filters in the washing machine with dusters.

@Ulysses

I’ve got a second set of filters so I’ve got a clean and dried out set to hand when they start to go. They’re non Dyson ones from Amazon and work great. I also ended up getting a replacement battery which was even better than the original. Again it wasn’t a Dyson brand and far cheaper.
We've just fitted a replacement battery last week. Cost less than £25 for a battery and 2 filters. The battery stores more power than the original and working great.

I've just found out that we could have repaired our nespresso machine instead of binning it a month ago. So angry with myself for that. We usually repair things if we can, but we were in the middle of helping my daughter with a bed bug emergency and didn't have time to google the problem. Hate wasting perfectly good appliances, so I'm furious with myself.

There was a solid 2" dirt/hair ball in there Envy it always looked clean when I rinsed it through before. Thanks for tip!

Ours was full of dust too. Am
Hoping that it will stop it smelling now

@knittingaddict where did you get the spare battery?
I need one to stop my OH moaning about how we should have got a Shark (he only ever vacuums the stairs for me).

I've been cleaning that filter by rubbing it under the tap but always wondered if there was a better way.
