Car Buying. golf 1l vs 1.4l

Sorry if wrong topic but I can’t find a car topic any more. I’ve currently got a 12 year old golf 1.4l. This does me well on once monthly 400 mile motorway trips. The rest of the month I probably do mainly trips of 10-40 miles each day on local roads/dual carriageways.

It’s getting to an age where I think it will start to cost more and be potentially less reliable so looking to spend about £16k on a 2-3 year old car, which I will probably keep for about 8-10 years again by which time I guess we will all be electric.

The dealer is trying to persuade me that a 1l golf will be fine for my needs. I’m sure that 1l is fine for local driving but it’s the motorway I’m more concerned about.

Having said that my previous car was 1.6l and by the time I swapped it the nippiness of the 1.4l had caught up!

I’m sticking with a golf as that’s what I know.I have little interest in cars generally !!

I wondered if anyone has any views please? I do appreciate its not the most riveting of subjects.

Thanks

Take it for a test drive and see for yourself

What is the power of the 1 l Golf? I assume it is a lot newer?

In the last few years engines have changed and now smaller engines have a lot more power. You're not comparing like with like.

I had a 1 litre Fabia estate with a 1 litre engine and it wasn't the most powerful one they made. It accelerated quite well both from 0-60 and 40-70 when getting onto the motorway etc. It's very likely that this golf will be fine for your needs, but you can always test drive it before committing.

Thanks.
Unfortunately it’s nowhere near any dual carriageways to test motorway capacity.
I agree that I should consider it as engines have improved so much but I don’t want to be caught out when I should be keeping it for 8+ years

Comparing the spec says that the current 1L is 108bhp and my 1.4 is 120bhp
0-60 is 10.4 and 9.2 seconds respectively.

Can you go to a different dealer to test drive one?

The 1 litre car will be fine. I've had 1 litre cars as hire cars and used motorways and dual carriageways with no issue, most recently a Fiat 500.

I had a 1litre ŠKODA 67 plate and now I have a 1litre Seat. Both fine. I couldn't believe it myself until I drove them. I could accelerate up a motorway slip road with four adults in the car
