When do you personally think a tv series should have finished?

The last season of Once Upon A Time should not have happened.

It ended with a good ending in series 6, and then tried to do an entire new series with the same story line. Bad failure.

Glee. Although there are some good episodes when the original cast left for college, it should have finished after they won nationals and graduated high school.

Handmaids tale. I think it should have finished after series one.

The US Office should’ve ended after Michael left.

There were some good episodes afterwards but it was never the same without him. The replacement bosses were too zany, creepy or just ridiculous.

The one that got it totally right IMO was The Wire - every series had its own identity, every episode pretty much note perfect.

I think MTVs Teen Mom OG needs to stop (if it hasn't already, I'm not sure). The show was originally about the problems faced by young parents but the girls aren't even teens anymore, some of them are married with subsequent children and everything they do seems contrived to create drama.
Agree most of them are late 20,s early 30,s now, and the kids are coming to an age where they could be teen parents themselves Its still limping along god knows how.

The Royle Family should have ended with the episode where Nana died. It was never the same again, and the Christmas specials after that were dreadful.

IntermittentParps · 26/08/2021 14:35

Six Feet Under was perfect. Ended at precisely the right time and with the best ending ever. Always leave the audience wanting more and all that. Agree, except about 'leave the audience wanting more' – it ends so comprehensively I could't think what more I could have asked for...

BittaOrange · 26/08/2021 14:35

Eastenders after episode one.

‘Scarborough’ by the same writer as ‘Benidorm’ was dire and thankfully hasn’t been recommissioned.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 26/08/2021 14:38

Tom and Jerry, when they redrew the characters so Tom was more 'kitteny' and they stopped hitting each other with frying pans and irons.

Yesss to this

Gilmore Girls before the final series (and the specials) - I’ve actually never managed to complete either of those because the writing is just appalling and the dynamic hasn’t changed enough despite the characters getting older.

FoxgloveSummers · 26/08/2021 14:42

Killing Eve after series 1

ScienceSensibility · 26/08/2021 14:51

Agree with ‘Killing Eve’ as well.

On the other hand, I thought ‘The West Wing’ ended perfectly and at the right time, much as I would have loved it to go on for eternity...

Firefretted · 26/08/2021 14:56

West Wing after season 4

Drivingbuttercup · 26/08/2021 14:56

Prison break, should have ended a lot earlier. Gave up on series 5

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 26/08/2021 14:59

Greys Anatomy should have concluded years ago.

Agree GOT needed to wait for more books

Hemingwaycat · 26/08/2021 14:59

Agreed with last series of LOD, I don’t think you’d ever be able to top a series with Stephen Graham as a main character and the ending was one of the biggest anti-climaxes ever. I think they’ll milk it for another series but I really don’t think they should.

Black Mirror was never the same when it switched to Netflix.

OhWhyNot · 26/08/2021 14:59

I loved series one of Killing Eve was so entertaining but it was enough

AreYouDaveGorman · 26/08/2021 15:00

How I met your mother. I loved it at first....the last few seasons just became ridiculous!

MumofSpud · 26/08/2021 15:04

Prison Break
The Walking Dead

Mrsfrumble · 26/08/2021 15:09

Misfits after season 2. Season 1 was perfection, season 2 was pretty good, but they should have ended it Robert Sheehan left. The character of Nathan was obnoxious but also lovable and hilarious; Rudy was just obnoxious.

I agree that The Handmaid’s Tale should after finished at the end of season 1. It was a brilliant adaptation of the book, but trying to take the story beyond that was always going to end in torture porn. I loved the enigmatic ending of the original story.

CassandraCross · 26/08/2021 15:10

I think the series that holds the gold medal for most overdone is Lost, my sister used to watch it and became more and more frustrated the longer it went on but hung in there to find out how it would end and then wished she hadn't bothered as the ending was so rubbish. I remember it being roundly panned at the time, you would think other series would take note.

Kanaloa · 26/08/2021 15:19

What a great thread! I personally think almost every show on tv could do with ending quicker, coming to a strong, planned ending rather than literally dragging it out till it can’t carry on.

Agree with prison break, I think that could have finished after series 2 really. And misfits didn’t really cope with Nathan leaving - he lightened up the episodes and added some comic relief. Also the storylines went a bit confusing after he left, and they’d clearly run out of material by s4.

I would add skins. I liked the first four series, with the exception of the ending of series four, then the fifth and sixth? It took a huge turn and felt so American, with lots of silly clique stuff and slapstick humour, and lost the brilliant grittiness that made it so relatable and watchable.

Soubriquet · 26/08/2021 15:19

Lost! I was addicted in the first few episodes. Then it got to series 2. And it just got worse. I think I gave up part way through season 2.

Forgot about Killing Eve. I think it was brilliant for the first two series (when Phoebe Waller-Bridge and then Emerald Fennell were in charge) and has gone downhill since. I still watched though and will watch the new series; I just love Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer and Fiona Shaw, and the threads and the locations/interiors of course.

Soubriquet · 26/08/2021 15:21

I’m ashamed to say this one because it’s one of my favourite series, but the 100.

It went in an extremely strange way when they killed off Lexa and introduced ALIE and the city of light.

Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed the series after it but I preferred it before it went the way it did

Redcrayons · 26/08/2021 15:23

Agree with loads of them. It’s a shame they don’t know when to quit and come up with something new.
How to Get away with Murder. I enjoyed it up till they brought in Laurels dad And started Frank randomly killing people.

The Office after Michael left.
last season of Parks and Rec should never have happened
Ozark after season 1
Prison Break, season 2 was ok but after that it was terrible.

Killing Eve after series 1.
In fact most American series go on way way too long.
