Driving back from Devon

Driving back from Devon up to the North West of England, feel like a break in the journey might be better than just a continuous drive like we had on the way down!!
Anyone got any recommendations for a bit of a diversion or stop off so we get to have a bit of a day out on the way home x

Tatton Park or Trentham

Ricekrispie22 · 26/08/2021 08:13

Or the World of Wedgewood if the weather isn’t great www.worldofwedgwood.com/content/family-activities

Gloucester - lovely city and the tourist bit around the docks (Gloucester Quays) and up to the cathedral isn’t too far to walk. Lots of lovely restaurants in the area too.

Sandwell Country Park, West Bromwich

Haggisfish3 · 26/08/2021 08:29

Gloucester services! Or countryside centre and park in Worcester-just off m5.

RandomMess · 26/08/2021 09:22

IKEA Birmingham 🤣

Vickim03 · 26/08/2021 09:34

Are you national trust members? Lots of lovely places along the way to stop off for a wander.

Kezzie200 · 26/08/2021 10:17

We stop at Gloucester Services which are great. Really convenient, pull off, decent food and shop, pull straight back on to the motorway.

If you want a town there's Cheltenham (which had a park and ride) close-ish by the M5.

Thanks everyone 🙂 we headed to the Gloucester services on the way down kids were not impressed about the lack of burger king!!! Is Shrewsbury a massive detour or is that enroute to the northwest

The Wild Place. Its a zoo. Just off j17 of the M5 at Bristol.

The Asda on the other side of the junction has cheap fuel and there's plenty of places to eat in the Mall at Cribbs Causeway.

We drive from north Devon to Scotland earlier this year. We stopped to walk the dog several times, the nicest was the Swan pond at West Bromwich. There is a McDonald’s near by which we also frequented before getting back on the miterway

PurBal · 26/08/2021 15:19

Download the National Trust app. We always use it for stop offs instead of services on long journeys.

Loubiemoo · 26/08/2021 15:22

Shrewsbury I would say is too far. M6 to M54 to Shrewsbury is about 35 miles each way from the M6.

hellcatspangle · 26/08/2021 15:29

Depends what you fancy doing. Worcester is about halfway, you could get off the motorway there and have a wander round town and some lunch. If you fancy going for a walk/let kids burn off some steam you could go to Worcester woods country park (they have a nice cafe and it's only just off the motorway)

Then head for the docks, aka The Peel Centre.

Burger King and all sorts of great food places that you and they might actually prefer. I'd heartily recommend Portivo Lounge.

Shops, boats, all sorts. And all without having to step into the town centre ☺️

PeacheyPeach · 26/08/2021 16:26

Ooo Worcester that sounds interesting x

If the M5/M6 is being rubbish it's not much longer time wise to dive off the M5 at Bristol, cross into Wales then go up the Welsh border - A40, A49 past Ludlow picking up the A5 at Shrewsbury then Oswestry, Wrexham and back to the motorway via the north Wales link road.

Lived in Shropshire for a few years but before that lived in Devon and spent time seeing friends in Devon. We almost always went north (from Shropshire) avoiding the motorways as the time saved was minimal with ongoing roadworks and a long way between junctions if the road were shut for any reason!

PeacheyPeach · 26/08/2021 17:21

Love the idea of not having to go through Birmingham @randomsabreuse and missing out the motorway!
