Do you have a nice bum?

My bum looks a bit like it's melting, or perhaps making an escape attempt by sliding down my legs.

What's the most effective way to get a nice toned bum? I walk loads every day but that's clearly not enough. Does the answer involve one million squats?

Apparently so. It’s been commented on as long as I can remember. Genetics, looks better when I’m training though.

Kinsters · 26/08/2021 04:17

Genetics and youth/lack of children.

I used to have an amazing bum and did no specific exercises. Now I'm 30 and pregnant with DC number 2 and its looking a little flat. The pregnancy weight gain has helped though as it naturally goes onto my bum. You could try working your glutes with resistance bands? That's what I plan to do at some unspecified point in the future to get my youthful bum back..

Snoopsnoggysnog · 26/08/2021 04:27

Mine is fab and peachy and I’m quite slim so I’d expect it to be quite flat but it isn’t! My DH adores it Grin However this thread is a bit of an eye opener - I do hardly any exercise at the moment and I’ve never even thought about the impact on my peachy bum. Must have a look…

Oh and my DD seems to have inherited it too Grin
Just as well as my DH has absolutely no arse - flattest bum ever and his mum and sister have the same.

FlowerArranger · 26/08/2021 04:30

You cannot target your bum in isolation. The good news is that even just 20 minutes of exercise a day will get you tight abs, thighs and a firm bum.

Do these, or similar, from now on, and your 60 year old self will thank you. Speaking from experience Wink

joystir59 · 26/08/2021 04:54

I have a very useful bum that functions perfectly! And it's slim as I'm a normal weight. I will settle for that.

aimss4777 · 26/08/2021 04:57

I did up until I gave birth 3 weeks ago! Now it seems to have disappeared Blush

Greytminds · 26/08/2021 05:04

My bum was just fine until my current pregnancy…I’m 35 weeks and it seems to have spread to become large and flat. I’ll be getting back into postnatal hiit and no doubt walking loads as soon as baby arrives and I’m well enough. That worked well last time when I had my first.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 26/08/2021 06:17

Yes. I do weightlifting

Justilou1 · 26/08/2021 06:22

Yeah but we’re married and he’s my bum. 😆

JorisBonson · 26/08/2021 06:23

I'm from a family of big bummed women. I used to hate it, but apparently I'm fashionable now.

Bluntness100 · 26/08/2021 06:26

Honestly our arses go flat and loose muscle definition as we age, if we don’t exercise.

I am fifty two and exercise five to six times a week. A mix of weightlifting and cardio. It keeps the muscle definition (not sure how else to put that) and also stops it sagging basically.

It’s the same for the rest of our bodies to be honest.

Indoctro · 26/08/2021 06:31

My area looks like it fainted even though I run loads.

Weights is the key, but I can't be arsed to do them.

Indoctro · 26/08/2021 06:31

Arse* not area Confused

Cam2020 · 26/08/2021 07:11

I have the flattest bum in history, I think. I have been a keen runner, a HIIT, body pump and yoga enthusiast and it's made no difference, so that's just the way I'm built it looks like!

EarringsandLipstick · 26/08/2021 07:26

Does the answer involve one million squats?

Kinda.

Weights, body resistance, lunges, squats, planks. You need to do this with someone qualified (online or f2f). The amount of people I see doing these type of exercises wrong is unreal.

EarringsandLipstick · 26/08/2021 07:29

Lunges it is then!

Will do nothing really, being blunt.

You need a structured programme, of a series of core exercise, and incrementally adding weights. With supervision.

I ran a lot, years, as my main exercise. Trained 3 times a week plus 2 race days. But after my 3rd DC bum especially felt flabby. Running was good exercise but it won't help much with core / muscle building. I took up HIIT & strength work in addition to running, makes all the difference.

EarringsandLipstick · 26/08/2021 07:32

@DancingLady

Used to hate my sticky-out bum and wish for a flat, boyish shape (it was the 90s and heroin chic was big). I'm 46 and love it now.
Actually this was me too! I hated that my bum stuck out, back in my 20s. Now 45, very glad of my physique now! I am much more accepting of my body now than I was 20 years ago, even if I've bad days still.
bananamushy · 26/08/2021 07:46

It's ok, most people's bums aren't great imo. A good bum has a nice shape & padding but harder to keep pert as you age.

Oblomov21 · 26/08/2021 07:47

I have the opposite problem, mine is big, rounded, high up. Apparently it's very desirable, but clothes shopping is a pain.

bananamushy · 26/08/2021 07:54

imo running is not good for your bum.

EarringsandLipstick · 26/08/2021 07:58

@bananamushy

imo running is not good for your bum.
This is true. If you run a lot without doing core / weights, you'll lose weight & muscle from your bum as you age.

I was in a running club for years. There was a certain body type for the women in their 40s, great runners, really lean, but no boobs/bum. As great as running is, and I love it, it doesn't help in terms of building muscle which is so important for women as we move into our 40s and start to lose muscle.

QueenLagertha · 26/08/2021 08:01

I used to hate my bum. My brothers used to
call me duck. Now I am fashionable and have had women approach me to ask how I got my bum 😂 my mum says it looks like you could crack nuts on it. I do exercises (lots of squats, lunges) which only seem to tighten it. In periods were I haven't been exercising, my bum gets a bit softer but doesn't change that much (so far)

lollipoprainbow · 26/08/2021 08:02

No I've hated mine for years way too big, I long for a small neat bum.

bananamushy · 26/08/2021 08:02

A friend wanted a bigger bum some years ago so had a trainer & they basically did full on weightlifting & an eating plan which was lots of calories & protein. It worked but hard to sustain

bananamushy · 26/08/2021 08:05
