How did this crab get in our 1st floor hotel room?

In the bathroom at around 8:30am and heard a tapping sound. Assumed it was pipes, it carried and sounded louder to look up and see a crab the size of an average mobile phone desperately trying to escape round the metal bathroom bin.
I have never left a bathroom so quickly in my life.
Went to reception who kindly removed the offending crab after a lot of laughter (from us all).

But it's bemused me as to how it's got in?
It was near a harbour but we hadn't been to the beach and we took out bags straight from the car to our room when we checked in around 5. Plus it was on the first floor!

Do crabs sleep? Would it have been there since the day before?? It was a family room with 4 of us in and I can't believe none of us had disturbed it till the next morning after 2 trips out after check in, and multiple showers/bathroom trips.

Do you have a balcony? Dropped by a seagull perhaps

Quirrelsotherface · 24/08/2021 16:22

Had you been to the beach?

Sparklfairy · 24/08/2021 16:25

Could it have been picked up by the previous guests crabbing? I've no idea how crabbing works.

And I hate to say it, but the same thing happened to us. Except we were on the 17th floor!

We came in from the beach and suddenly noticed a crab halfway up the wall, holding on to a picture frame. Grossed me out like a giant spider would and we flapped for a bit, terrified it was going to scuttle off somewhere.

We went to reception and tried to explain to reception but with the language barrier they just looked confused (obviously). Eventually they sent an absolute tank of a man upstairs who came up the lift with us in total silence, but with an air of 'I'm here to rescue the poor stupid tourists' Grin

He was absolutely baffled when he saw it. Spoke no English and started mumbling and shrugging and looking bewildered. Eventually he just picked up a flip flop and just bashed it while we squealed.

At the time we had no idea how it got there, but now I assume a previous guest had put a dead crab there (judging by the way it pretty much disintegrated with one smack) and we just hadn't noticed it.

The next day I told the story to a hotel rep I was friendly with. Again language barrier. I said a crab was in our room, and he kept saying, 'a crap? a crap? how did it get up there?!' I shrugged and said, 'I dunno, it probably rode in the lift', which just made the whole thing funnier.

Sorry, this was just too weird a coincidence not to tell the story! I reckon a live one escaped from the previous guests Wink

It appals me that the first instinct for so many people when dealing with animals in situations like this is to kill them. Three adult humans standing around a crab and one of them bashing it in? What is wrong with people? It's a crab, not a bomb.

We really are a plague upon this earth.

Sparklfairy · 24/08/2021 16:35

@JonahofArk Hmm it was very obviously dead, in hindsight. Trust me.

The poor butch bloke was actually a bit scared I think, didn't want to pick it up and didn't want to lose face.

JonahofArk · 24/08/2021 16:38

@Sparklfairy yes, it was dead in hindsight. But you all thought it was alive when the decision was made to bash it in.

Well it's a good thing that a man didn't lose face eh? That would be terrible.

Sparklfairy · 24/08/2021 16:43

@JonahofArk Jesus Christ.

  1. You're assuming 'we' were adults. Nope. Single mother with three kids actually (of which I was one).
  2. There was no decision - the man didn't speak English so it's not like we stood around having a fucking discussion. He just picked up the flip flop of his own accord. It was done quick as a flash.

But that's fine, if you want to derail the thread with your pearl clutching without even bothering to actually answer the OP, you go ahead. I'm not playing.

BrozTito · 24/08/2021 16:45

They're amazing at climbing and often come up drains

DGRossetti · 24/08/2021 16:47

Some crabs climb trees ...

And if you are kabourophobic, probably best not read about Coconut Crabs

BrozTito · 24/08/2021 16:49

I used to go fishing a lot off Scarborough sealife shore. You turn your back for a bit and suddenly three crabs are shimmying up your line at pace

Fiddliestofsticks · 24/08/2021 16:50

Did you read the opening post?

My ds is in Magaluf..

I like crabs, they’re cute. Don’t know how it got in your room though. It sounds like a little one, could it possibly have hidden away in someone’s beach bag or something then crawled out and hid somewhere?

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 24/08/2021 17:00

A good few years ago we went to Cuba, in a 1st floor bar and a crab took a dislike to my bil. It chased him to the cigar bar, the terrace, back to our table. No one else, just clacking it’s little claws at him and chasing him. It was hysterical.

CloudPop · 24/08/2021 17:02

Christ - Don't dislike the critters but what a freak out finding one in your room

Sneakycrab · 24/08/2021 17:31

Haha I know I don't mind them at the beach but not when I'm in a vulnerable state in the bathroom!

Can't believe others have had one visit as well.

Oh god you think it might have come up the toilet?

BrozTito · 24/08/2021 17:34

Dont google snakes/rats toilet drain climbing skills. Also...sloths.

Pinkywoo · 24/08/2021 17:38

Crabs are cute, I can't believe people would actually go and get someone from reception to remove it for them. It's a crab not a bloody tiger, pick it up and put it back on the beach!

Galassia · 24/08/2021 17:41

He probably came in as it was a bit nippy outside.

*gets coat...

My mum was absolutely not going to leave three young kids in a hotel room in a foreign country, carry a (what we thought was) live crab down the lift 17 floors, walk up the road, down a huge flight of steps, and down another road to put it back on a beach. We certainly never thought they'd kill it, but as it's as easy as you say, do the above themselves.

Exactly this, I fully agree.
